GDC Plans Expansion
By BILL DRBEN
General Development Corp. an-
nounced Monday that it will build a 550 -
house development within its community
of Sebastian Highlands.
The Miami -based development cor-
poration said that its Sabal Palm
development will be located in the
eastern portion of the 5,060 -acre com-
munity.
Sales of the new development are
expected to begin March 9, with an open
house of the newly constructed models of
the homes that will be available.
Sebastian Highlands was first
developed by General Development in
1959, and is two miles south of Sebastian
and 12 miles north of Vero Beach.
Despite record high mortgage rates
for home loans, General Development
officials said they feel that there is a
strong demand for homes in this area.
They base this on information from
corporation salesmen operating out of
offices in the northern U.S., who say that
demand is strong for housing in this
area.
The homes will be certified under
Florida Power and Light's Watt Wise
program, a program that incorporates
many energy-saving features expected
to save the homeowner as much as 20
percent on his electric costs.
The Sebastian Highlands area contains
a swimming lake, tennis courts, park,
playground and recreation area.
The expansion of Sebastian Highlands
development will begin five months
before work starts on General
Development's other development —
Vero Highlands — which is scheduled to
begin expansion. in July.
One of the first projects under the
redevelopment of Vero Highlands is
restructuring the entrance to the com-
pecten to begin this venture this month, years ago.
