It is my understanding that no trees would have to be moved to accommodate it.At Jordan Park ,it would remain in an area of other historic homes which have been preserved, hopefully soon to be joined by the "Old Train Station" I have no idea what the criteria is for getting grants to preserve it. I know time is of the essence, but securing grants with the least cost to the city should be considered in making this decision. The George Cain House would be an ideal spot to house the Sebastian Area Historical Society and its collection. The Historical Society gives a very informative outdoor presentation of the historic area and the homes there. What better place than in a house of historic interest to weave their "Tales of Sebastian" I know City Council doesn't have as much time to ponder this decision as the placement of the 75 Anniversary Clock, but hope you can arrive at a decision most people will support. This is an excellent idea. First, the city has the money, and, second, some form of our heritage needs to be saved to remind us of the city's first residents. In addition, the architecture of the past and type of housing avialable at that time should not just be remembered in text books but available for all to see in person. Further, the addition of an ORIGINAL Sebastian property to Jordan Park, and area of public domain, enhances the public usage and utility of the park, not to mention upgrading the park as a showcase of our past. Those who would say that they want the park to be pristine should buy a dictionary, as the park left pristine behind years ago. Recently, I have gone to considerable expense to rennovate the "Carriage house" on the old Doctor Rose property in order to preserve one of the original Sebastian buildings (circa 1920). If the Dr. Rose house had not been burnt beyond repair, I would have done the same to it. My personal contribution to Sebastian, has been difficult and time consuming, however those are the sacrifices that one makes to preserve our past...... the City of Sebastian should do the samel Thank you, Harry Mac Grotty Ft. Relative to the Historic house being moved it seems to me the best location would be at the park adjacent to the Chamber of Commerce building on Main Street. The reason for this is the proximity to the Historic area and the possible location of the train station at a site close to the Chamber building. If both buildings are close to one another it would be a natural tie in of Historic buildings. The park at the Chamber is rarely, if ever, utilized by the public at this time. In addition , the new area at Riverview Park has a nice layout currently planned. It would be altered by the addition of a Historic building in an area which is planned for family recreation. I would think that the Airport location would be somewhat defeating the purpose. Showcasing our past, exhibiting reverence to those who were our original residents, and preservation of their homes, should be viewed by all. Very few tourists or residents would be exposed to the effort at the airport, and further, the level of participation in the project would suffer considerably. Restorative architecture can not be appreciated in obscurity. Might as well take it apart and put it in a wharehouse. This is a community effort, lets locate the building where it can be enjoyed by many while having a day in the park. Picnicing among the things of our heritage along the Indian River somehow seems much more attractive than picnicing at the Airport. Don't you think? Thanks again for getting back to me. A location in a designated Historic/Cultural District would open doors for federal funds. Another consideration would be using the space for nonprofits or for special events. Showcasing your history in a display would be accessible to all your residents and visitors. The Cultural Council of Indian River County would welcome a space to serve our northern county residents. Please consider these uses and the potential for generating operating revenue through renting space or display areas when you consider the location. Thank you for your consideration. I have been working hard to keep my own home as original as possible in an effort of preserving, along with others, our town's history. It would be heart felt to see this historical home just leveled without the thought of saving it. I was interested in bidding on this particular home years ago when it was for sale so I could restore it myself but was out of town when it sold. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help convince you to make the right decision to save this house and Sebastian's History from being wipe-out. Thank you. Sincerely, p Ms. Quentin Walter 13700 Ruffner Lane Sebastian, FL 32958 772.589.8826 April 28, 2004 Dear City Council Members, My name is Clayton Laplatte, and I am in the 8th grade here at Sebastian River Middle School. I know I have not lived here in this town that long, but I have something to say, from a 14 year olds point of view, in regards to saving the Cain House. My mom happens to be involved in a sort of historic project of her own. You see, she is opening up a Business in one of the towns historic homes, so I have been hearing and learning alot about some of the history here in Sebastian. Where we moved from, a much larger City, there are some historic places, but you just don't hear too much about them except on school field trips and stuff because they are so out of the way and the City is just so big. But I can tell you how interesting those field trips were to us kids to see how things were so different back then, much different than they are now, from the construction, to the materials and the unique crafstmanship you rarely see, except for in these historic buildings. It makes you wonder about those people, back in those times, when life was so much simpler. How nice it is that there are some of those places for kids to see first hand ,even in a big City. I was recently informed about the plight of the relocation of the old Cain house while doing weekly current event classwork in my history teacher, Mrs. O'keefe's class. I chose to do mine about that article. I would like to see the Cain House moved to Jordan Park, and slot of kids that I know would like that too. We are going to start a petition at our school and send you all of the signatures we get. I hope that will help to make a difference. All I am asking is to think about the future, like we are asked to do all the time. It can't hurt to keep it here for the town, and I think slot of people, not just kids, think it would be a great asset to the park too. Please take my letter into consideration when it is decided what is going to happen to the future of the Cain house. I recently moved here from Fort Lauderdale, in search of a safe and beautiful place to raise my fourteen year old son, as well as a place I could be happy to live my fife in. We traveled up and down the East coast for alot of the last 2 years looking for that place. We found that place here, in your town of Sebastian. The people, the history, the memorable historic charm of Sebastian, that's a big part of why we wanted to five here. I recently decided to go into business for myself, and I was fortunate to find the Historic Bamma Lawson House up for lease. I became motivated to not only open up a business, but to also put my efforts into bringing that charming old house back to life, as it seemed to have been vacant and neglected for some time. In the process, I was blessed with the good fortune of learning a great deal about this city and some of its history, not to mention some wonderfid stories about the Bamma House and some of the residents of that generation who also loved this community. Since I started this project, a very large part of this community have come forward and blessed us with their generosity and support of what we have been doing over there at Bamma's. Just keep in mind, once the memorable old historic buildings are gone, they are gone for good. You can't bring them back. The people that relocate here, come because of this community and its historical charm. The people that five here, love this town that they moved to years ago largely because of the historic charm. With so tittle of these buildings left, why is it necessary to destroy what we still do have? So let us keep it, keep it for our future, and the future's of those that are still to come. I, as well as many others who five in this community, would love to see the Cain House moved to Jordan Park, and if you would like to help and take part in the preservation of your communities history, you will be doing an incredible service to the town we five in, a beautiful, charming and historic town named Sebastian. Is it an historical or hysterical house? It appears that the tax payers money, to the tune of $36,400 has been spent without questions asked, a valid cause or use. How much more money is going to be spent before it's over. Does the "House" have any historical connection to Pelican Island? Was Mr. Cain a fisherman of note, or did he fish at all? Maybe the old shack should be a "Railroad Museum" since Mr. Cain was an employee of the railroad? What ever!!! No more of the taxpayer's money should be spent on this so-called Historical "money pit" project. PLEASE!!! This is once that the "powers that were" should have "looked the gift horse in the mouth" and said NO thanks, and spent the money on a worthy cause that would have benefited the City of Sebastian and its residents. It's their money. E-mail nancywarrick@scripps.com A concerned resident and voter in Sebastian, Nancy Warrick wz& F ORCGn✓ L
