HomeMy WebLinkAbout01121998 RACCity of Sebastian Recreation Advisory Committee January 12, 1998 7:00 PM Minutes Public Works Director Patrick Brennan called the meeting to Order. Roll Call: the following members were present: Randy Snyder - Sebastian Area Little League Maura Raborn - Sebastian Panthers, Inc. Cory Richter - Sebastian Soccer Association, Inc Clifford Moss - Sebastian Old Boys Virginia Nichols - Friendly Tennis Group Marjorie Schaub - Sebastian River Art Club Robert Bates - Craft Club of Sebastian Nancy Diamond - Indian River County Parks and Recreation Liaison Carol McConnell - Citizen -at -large David, Nisbet, Alternate Larry Driver, alternate was absent. Staff members present were Patrick Brennan, Public Works Director and Linda Kinchen, Recording Secretary. Mr. Brennan entertained nominations for Chairman - Maura Raborn nominated Cory Richter second by Nancy Diamond - passed unanimously. Mr. Richter as chairman took over the meeting and entertained nominations for Vice Chairman. Mrs. Schaub nominated Nancy Diamond, second by Maura Raborn passed unanimously. Old Business: None on Agenda but Mr. Brennan stated that the Council mandated that committees should be set by Ordinance and one should be created to cover the Recreation Advisory Committee. The chairman direct Mr. Brennan to work on an ordinance since there was no objection from the rest of the committee. New Business: Set regular meeting date and time. The committee through discussion decided on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 PM. As an alternate if the third Monday is unavailable due to Holidays, etc, the committee wishes to meet on the fourth Monday of each month. The next meeting will therefore be on February 23, 1998 since the third Monday is a holiday. There was no input from the public. Members Matters: Mrs. McConnell asked what exactly the committee was expected to accomplish. Mr. Richter tried to give a brief overview of the reason the committee was established. Mrs. Raborn stated that she had received a complaint from someone who was rushed off the tennis courts. Mrs. Nichols, of the Friendly Tennis Group stated that the courts are on a first come first serve basis and most people know that the standard time for singles and doubles apply. She stated that the resident should have stood his ground and stayed to finish his game. -r Page 2 of 2 Minutes January 12, 1998 Recreation Advisory Committee Minutes Mrs. Nichols suggested signs be installed stating "First come First served" and time limitations of one hour for singles and one and one half hour for doubles apply. Mr. Snyder stated he felt signs should not be installed for one complaint, If the City received 8 to 10 per week or it became a real problem then the City should think about putting up signs however, he indicated that they still would be hard to enforce. Discussion turned to obtaining land for a soccer complex. Mr. Snyder stated he thought the County bought some land out west near the high school and if they have that recommendations for use as soccer fields should be made now while the land is in the planning stages before its too late to change. Mrs. Diamond stated the county had some land in the City which might be able to be used such as the old water treatment plant locations on Filbert Street or Bailey Drive. A motion to adjourn was made by Mrs. Raborn second by Mrs. McConnell - passed unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 7:45 PM. Approved unanimously on February 23, 1998.
