It is wonderful that our resi-
dents once again have rallied
to help out with projects that
enhance our “patch of Para-
dise.”
Tuesday, a huge group of
people will gather to paint the
fence around the boccie court.
You are asked to bring a brush
and an empty milk jug to put
the white paint in. All people
will be served hot dogs, soda
and chips and a few laughs
will be a part of the day.
Thank you to Irene Thorn-
ton for getting phase one
started, though we did clean
up the area last Saturday with
the newly formed “garden
club” group. Many donations
were received for family me-
morial trees and that is excit-
ing and appreciated.
It’s amazing we are celebrat-
ing plantings while friends in
the north are fighting ice
storms and cooler weather. We
may have a “name the Memo-
rial area” suggestion soon, so
think about what the area
should be called.
Nice to know some of our
people are recuperating, name-
ly Mac McGovern, riding his
motorized chair; Chris Deme-
trops home after a fall; Gene
Griffin coming along nicely;
Sue Wolford had gall bladder
surgery; and Richard Thursby
still is hospitalized.
Agnes Shaeffer is home from
the hospital in Ohio; her ad-
dress is 114 Rolling Acres,
CRW, in Massilon, OH 44646.
Nancy Shuey’s also doing bet-
ter at home. Our past resident
and friend Peg Lyons in Rhode
Island is recuperating from
kidney problems. We miss her
and wish her well.
The boccie teams are having
great games on Thursdays and
Fridays, come and join in as a
sub anytime or be the cheer-
ing gallery.
We have arrived at the half-
way point in the bowling
league and Jim Colbert’s team
is leading the way with Joanne
Griffin’s team in second place.
Thanks once again to Marge
Clark for a great trivia game
on Jan. 14; we had 27 players.
Today is the kickoff for the
shuffleboard league, which
will have 16 teams and split
sessions each Monday, so
come pick up your rosters to-
day and thanks again to Phyl-
lis Krieger for being in charge.
Some of your board mem-
bers attended a meeting with
Countryside North recently
and exchanged information on
problems with ELS. We are
happy to report our clubhouse
is coming along, kitchen cabi-
nets are in and will be finished
when appliances arrive; sinks
also should be in soon. Our li-
brary shelves will go up soon
also and that makes Florence
Texier so happy, she has a
warehouse of books and puz-
zles stored.
People love a warm hug, or
just a friendly pat on the back.
Lorraine Chaput writes this column
each Monday; her deadline is the
Tuesday before. Reach her at (772)

Since 1994 (that’s 13 years), I
have been a “stringer” for the
Press Journal.
It is my job to report on hap-
penings in our community.
My personal opinion is not to
be considered. With that in
mind, I’ll attempt to give a
brief run-down of recent
events.
At a special meeting Jan. 16
at Parish Hall, the 150 or so
coming and going attendees
were introduced to an ad hoc
committee consisting of Bill
Stahl, 418 N. Sandpiper; Bob
Aberns, 345 W. Sandpiper; Ar-
thur Caul, 814 W. Sandpiper;
Ann Carinci, 209 Blue Heron;
and Ed Nelson, 286 Swan Lane.
This committee has peti-
tioned vigorously to be recog-
nized as a legitimate group
working outside the Country-
side North Residents Associa-
tion for the benefit of resi-
dents. They have been advised
to start over with a new board
of directors and to renegotiate
with ELS, the group that owns
the park. In addition to the
clubhouse, there are other se-
rious problems this committee
says needs to be addressed.
An Orlando attorney was at
the meeting to give a review of
our experiences since the 2004
hurricanes and our present sit-
uation. He believes the resi-
dents have been “snookered”
by continuing to pay rent for
amenities we have not been re-
ceiving for more than two
years.
On Jan. 17, the CNRA board
meeting brought out 29 resi-
dents in addition to the seven
board members. Jeanne Blais
was absent. It was necessary
for her to be with Ernie, her
husband, who was having sur-
gery. Our thoughts are with
them.
A topic of discussion that re-
surfaced was the acceptance
from management of $25,000
for social affairs, including
rent for Parish Hall, and the
use of an inadequate building
as an “activity center” while
we are without a clubhouse.
This matter still is being chal-
lenged. There are opposing
views how this came about
without a resident vote and
how wise a move it was.
At 10 a.m. Thursday, the an-
nual CNRA meeting to elect a
board of directors will be at
Parish Hall.
All residents have received a
manila envelope with colorful
sheets, including the slate of
officers, to be read at leisure. A
yellow proxy sheet, a shock-
ing-pink absentee ballot and
two small white envelopes
may be returned in the green
stamped envelope to Robert
Reese, if necessary. He is the
person in charge. A white
sheet gives the agenda for the
meeting and requests that all
fellow members read the en-
closed material carefully.
All residents are encouraged
to be there to help resolve
what has been a “talked
about” topic of controversy
and help decide who will as-
sume the leadership roles
needed to get our lives back on
track. Will there be nomi-
nations from the floor?
Now on the lighter side,
everyone is invited to stop by
the activity center to see Coun-
tryside woodcarvers. They
meet from 1 to 3 p.m. every
Tuesday.
One member does beautiful
chip carving. Others like to
carve various objects. They
have been known to carve 25
percent of the time and palav-
er the other 75 percent.
No drinking, swearing,
smoking or chewing tobacco
leaves it open to women as
well as men. They have lots of
bandages. Call Bob Rafferty,
(772) 562-7395, or just drop by.
This is a great time to join.
There is an interesting wood-
carving show in Port St. Lucie
the first weekend in February
with books, tools and wood.
A correction from some time
ago. I referred to Jim Martin
as a member of the Navy. He
has waited patiently for me to
make it known he served in
the Marine Corps. Sorry, Jim!
On Jan. 15, Orpha Wilmeth,
623 Osprey, died at Indian Riv-
er Medical Center. Our condo-
lences to her sister Sigrid Dan-
iels of Minnetonka, Minn.

days.
