1 4 SEBASTIAN POLICE DETECTIVE.
JOE DILLON RECEIVED
RECOGNITION BY GOVERNOR JEB
B USHU
By: Captain David Puscher
On September 13, 1999, Sebastian Police
Detective, Joe Dillon, was recognized for
his valuable contribution made to the
children of Florida. Governor Bush and FDLE
Commissioner Tim Moore presented this award as part of
the State of Florida Local Law Enforcement Officer of the
Year selection. Detective Dillon traveled to Tallahassee
after being nominated to receive the award. Fifty law
enforcement officers were nominated and four were
selected. Detective Dillon was recognized after his
relentless pursuit of an individual who was stalking a 9 -
year old boy. The stalker in question had an affliction
with pre -pubescent young boys. As a result of Detective
Dillon's diligent work ethic he was able to deter this
individual from further stalking of other young boys.
Detective Dillon was also instrumental in establishing a
county wide task force, which regularly meets to
exchange intelligence information in an effort to protect
children from becoming victims of sex crimes and abuse.
The Missing Children Information Clearinghouse, a
National Organization, cosponsors this prestigious award.

RADON: A SILENT KILLER
® Radon is a radioactive gas that you can't see, taste or
smell. It is produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil.
rock and water.
Why the concern?
Indoor radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer
after smoking.
How does radon get in?
Radon can seep through cracks in foundations, openings
around the sump pumps and drains, construction joints
and cracks in walls. Radon may also be in well water and
can be released into the air when you shower.
What's the danger level?
Radon is measured in picocuties per liter of air (pCi/L).
The EPA recommends reducing indoor radon levels that
are above 4 pCi/L. Any home -new or old- may have a
problem. The EPA recommends that homes be tested o a
an annual basis.
How do 1 test?
Testing for radon is simple and inexpensive. You can buy
do-it-yourself kits at hardware stores or through the mail
for $10 to $45. You should purchase only EPA -certified
radon test kits. You can also choose to do short- or long-
term testing depending on when you need test results.
Contact your state radon office for information about
having your well water tested.
What ifthe radon level is 4 pCill or above?
You need to reduce it. Most homes today can be reduced
to 2 pCi/L or below, but there is really no "safe" level.
Sealing cracks and other openings is a step in the right
direction, but it's recommended that you contact a radon
mitigation contractor to reduce the level by installing a
special system.

BITS & PIECES
One day in 1853, George Crum, head chef at a posh
Saratoga Springs (New York) resort, prepared fried
potatoes as part of the evening's menu. A finicky
customer kept returning his potatoes to the kitchen,
complaining that they were too thick. Finally, an enraged
Crum picked up his sharpest knife, sliced some potatoes
wafer thin, and deep-fried them in boiling fat. Rather than
be annoyed, the troublesome customer loved them. Soon
other guests wanted to order the "Saratoga chip." The
rest is potato chip history.

BET YOU DIDN"T KNOW
Men are 20% more likely than women to sneeze in a dusty
room... A cup of coffee yogurt contains about as much
caffeine as a 12 -ounce can of cola... Dandruff is not
caused by dry scalp — fact is, it's more common with oily
scalps... Whispering when you're hoarse is actually worse
for your vocal cords than speaking normally... "Rx," the
symbol appearing on prescriptions, means "take, "from
the Latin work for recipe.
"The "haves" and the "have nots" can be traced back to
the "did" and the "did nots." — Anthony Kleo
