MISCELLANEOUS EMPLOYEE NEWS
Dawn Corapi, Clerical Assistant 11, Building
Department, has received her Associates in Computer
Science Degree from Brevard Community College. She
has worked hard and long to achieve her goal. Best of
luck, Dawn.
The Fourth of July float that city employees
volunteered to work on was a great success. Not only did
it look beautiful mid pahiotic, it sounded even better with
the music supplied by JD Sound Productions, hrc.
(Detective Joe Dillon of the Sebastian Police Department,
who by the way is available for private parties, so write to
him at c/o Sebastian Police Station, 1225 Main Street,
Sebastian, FL 32958). Everyone did a fantastic job and
really pulled together as a team. Certificates of
Appreciation will be given out at the City Council meeting
of August 11 th. We had many more employees this year
participating in the design and assembly of the float (also
their families). Great Job!

FOR HEART HEALTH GO MEDITERRANEAN
By: Kathv.Brauer
The Mediterranean diet has been recognized as a savory
alternative to the American heart -healthy diet. Two
recent studies confirmed the positive benefits for heart
patients of a diet high in fish, fruits, vegetables, grains,
and beans.
One component of that diet -fish oil - appears to be
particularly beneficial, according to a study by Italian
doctors of more than 11,000 heart attack victims. Tlie
results, presented at a meeting of the American College of
Cardiology in New Orleans, showed that those who took
fish oil supplements reduced their risk of dying from heart
disease by 15%.
Dr. Gianni Tognoni, a researcher for the study, said it
may be that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil work on the
inside lining of clogge4 blood vessels.
A related study showed that those who eat a
Mediterranean diet are as much as 70% less likely to
suffer a second heart attack than those who follow a
Western diet.

ASTHMA
IVIn the U.S., asthma rates have increased 75% since
1980, with cases among very young children up 160%.
Question: "Why is this occurring in the face of better
tools for treatment and better understanding of the disease
itself?'
"Asthma is the body's cry that something is going
wrong. What are we doing to ourselves?"
More than 15 million Americans have asthma —
resulting in over 10 million doctor's visits, almost two
million ER visits, and almost 500,000 hospitalizations a
year.
The precise cause remains unknown.
Possible triggers include "tighter" houses that provide
less circulation, and early childhood exposure to allergens
and toxins (e.g., tobacco smoke, cat dander, cockroaches,
dust mites, and car exhaust fumes).

GO TO SCHOOL ON MONEYISSUESI

it probably is.

MONEY IS NOT THE GREATEST GIFT
The greatest gift you can give your kids is not money,
but a good example of how to manage money.
For example, if you're constantly spending more than
you earn, your kids will probably grow up to do the same
(they'll also inherit the stress that comes with being
chronically in debt).
On the other hand, if you're a smart shopper, you save
money and generally do a good job of managing your
finances, your kids will probably do the same.

ARE YOUR TY COBB ORA MAX CAREY7
Every baseball fan knows that Ty Cobb was one of
baseball's greatest players. His record for stealing bases
stood for years. Cobb stole 96 bases the year he set the
record.
Ask baseball fans if they know Max Carey, and most of
them will shake their heads and ask, "Who was Max
Carey?" Carey, too, had baseball talent. In fact, one
season he attempted 53 stolen bases and succeeded 51
times — an unbelievable 96 percent. Ty Cobb stole 96
bases the year he set the record, but he tried 134 times.
That is only 71 percent. Cobb was willing to chance
failure, and because of it, he became legendary in the
baseball Hall of Fame. Max Carey, who played it safe
time after time, is not remembered today.
