"Physiologists used to think that people aged functionally
from 10% to 15% a decade.
Now we know this is far from the truth.
Fit individuals show a 5% loss in endurance per decade.
The world's record at the age of 40 in distance races is
within 5% of the actual world's record. At 50, it's within
10%. At 60, it's close to 15%.
This is clear evidence that apparent aging is due more to
inactivity than to loss of work capacity."

Face it, nobody owes you a living.
What .you achieve or fail to achieve in your lifetime is
directly related to what you do, or fail to do.
People don't choose their parents or childhood, but you
can choose your own direction.
Everyone has problems and obstacles to overcome, but
that too is relative to each individual.
Nothing is carved in stone, you can change anything in
your life if you want to badly enough.

their actions are the real winners in life.
Winners meet fife's challenges head on, knowing there are

`UE IS A GAMBLE," a Mother Cabbage told her
offspring, Brussels Sprout. `You have to weather storms
and drought. You have to fend off animals, bugs, mold,
and rot. But if you hang in there, you'll grow."
"IT try," said the little Sprout. `But how long does
this take. When should I stop growing?"
"As with any other gamble," said Mother Cabbage.

Four thousand years ago, the ancient Egyptians attended
parties with cones of scented fat on their heads. The fat
would meh during the Estivides, emitting a fragrance that
functioned as one of humanity's first perfumes.
Today, Americans spend $6 billion a year on perfumes
and colognes. Of this $6 billion spent on fragrances, a
third goes to products for men.
Back in 1962 President John F. Kennedy was exchanging
pleasantries with a conservative industrialist at the White
House.
"You know," mused the Chief Executive, "if I weren't
President, I'd be buying stocks now."
"Yes," said the businessman. "And if you weren't
President, I'd be buying them too."

People are worried about high cholesterol but a new study
has shown that unusually low amounts may sometimes
trigger strokes also.
The study says that very high cholesterol raises the risk of
strokes that result from blood clots in the brain. But it
also showed that low cholesterol increases the hazard of
the less common but potentially devastating hemorrhagic
strokes that result from burst blood vessels in the brain.
The ideal amount of cholesterol level is 200 for preventing
these strokes. .

STAFF MEETINGS
The boss always scheduled the weekly staff meeting at
4:30 on Fridays. When one of the employees finally got
up the nerve to ask why, she explained: `I'll tell you why
— I've learned that's the only time when none of you
seem to want to argue with me."

MORE CAREER ETIQUETTE
O Don't interrupt. Because we hear faster than people
talk, it's tempting to finish other people's sentences
mentally — and jump in with a response.
O Don't correct another person's pronunciation or
grammar. If someone says 'rhat's for Mary and
ignore the mistake.
O Include everyone. When you're in a group, maintain
eye contact with everyone — don't focus on a single
person, even if he/she's in charge.
While dining, divide your attention between the
people sitting on your right and left.
O Note yawns. Yawns and shifting eyes are indications
you're boring your listeners. Change the conversation.

40 Restless Leg Syndrome — described as a restless,
creepy, crawly, aching sensation in the legs that's relieved
by movement — affects about 5% of Americans. It is the
fourth leading cause of insomnia.
Problems behind this syndrome include iron deficiency,
anemia, uremia, diabetes, pregnancy, Parkinson's disease,
sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and rheumatoid arthritis -- but
the disorder remains poorly understood.
If you think you have this problem, be sure to get
checked for iron deficiency anemia, and for nerve
problems in your legs. Several medications have been
found to be helpful.

BAD NEAPS ABORT SUNSCREENS
Regular use of a sunscreen – with an SPF of 15 or
more – during the first 18 years of life can cut the lifetime
risk of non -melanoma skin cancer by 781/6.
The bad news: Sunscreen may not provide
protection against melanoma – the most deadly type of
skin cancer.
Researchers believe the use of sunscreens may
actually accelerate the onset of melanoma. This is
because they allow people to sit out in the sun longer –
and ultimately expose themselves to more ultraviolet rays.
Bottom line: Use sunscreen to protect you for
sunburn and some types of skin cancer.
To reduce the risk of melanoma try to stay out of
the sun between the hours of 10 a rn. and 3 p.m. – hours
when the sun is most intense. Wear tightly -woven
clothing, sunglasses, and a widembrimmed hat for
increased protection.•

AIABETES. BREAST CANCER
V American women are far more likely to die of adult-
onset diabetes than of breast cancer.
One reason why you don't hear this statistic
mentioned is that while diabetes is actually the direct
cause of death for 17% of American women, it's
substantially under reported on death certificates.
According to a recent Gallup poll, 82% of women
believe that breast cancer causes more deaths than
diabetes.
NOTE.• Only 3.6% of American women die of breast
cancer.

MEN A WEIGHT LOSS
to Weight loss is the No. 1 way to prevent coronary
artery disease for `healthy" muddle age men who are
overweight.
Men who lose weight see more benefits, including
lower blood pressure, than men who exercise regularly
and who maintain their weight.
"Exercise alone will not do it," say researchers.
"You have to get the excess weight off."
NOTE: Cut calories by eating more fruits,
vegetables, and grains — and less fat (e.g., fatty meats,
fried foods, oils, butter, margarine, whole -milk products,
gravies, spreads, dressings).
Exercise regularly to reduce stress and take the edge
off your appetite.
