`What vacation?"
Three Simple Words
"When I was in high school, I was very shy.
One day we were required to memorize a poem
and recite it while standing next to our desks.
As usual, I had a panic attack. When my turn
came, I stood by my desk, read my poem, and sat
down.
At that moment, Tim Murphy, whose desk was in
front of mine, turned to me and said, `You did good!'
Now, Jim wasn't interested in me romantically.
He was just kind enough to make that comment — not
something you'd find in a whole lot of freshman boys.
I never forgot that incident, and even though it
happened over 30 years ago, I longed for the
opportunity to thank Tim.
That opportunity arrived when I saw him and his
wife at a class reunion.
I took them aside and thanked Jim for his
kindness toward a shy, trembling girl.
He didn't remember the incident, and had no idea
what a tremendous impact his words had made on my
life.
Three simple words —'You did good!'
What a difference each of us could make if we all
would remember to be as kind to others as Tim was to
me."

A WA Y TO COUNT THE DA YS - and the Fat
By Margie Poole
More than a third of all Americans are overweight —
often because they're not careful about fat intake. To
help cut the fat, there's The 1997 Illustrated Calendar
of Fat, put together by John Flaherty, a photographer
from Waltham, Mass. "I'm 43, I was beginning to
develop a belly, and I wanted to shed a few pounds,"
Flaherty told PARADE. His calendar offers graphic
comparisons about the fat content of foods. Such as:
• Two french fries from a fast-food restaurant equal
two whole baked potatoes ('/z gram of fat).
• One chocolate donut equals 70 oranges (21 grams of
fat).
• One corn chip equals 40 baby carrots (1 gram of
fat).
• One peanut equals 2.86 cups of air popped popcorn
(0.86 grams of fat).
• One ounce of potato chips equals 20 ounces of
pretzels (10 grams of fat).
• A third of the recommended serving of Creamy
Parmesan dressing equals about 10 pounds of
tomatoes (6 grams of fat).
LESS STRESS
Welcome Customer Complaints?
Over the years, studies have shown that soliciting
customer complaints can help cement customer loyalty.
That is, it pays to make complaining easy for your
customers.
No matter how good your product is, you're
going to get complaints. Whether these complaints are
legitimate or not, you've got to deal with them.
If whining customers stress you out, consider
this:
ON LOW-COST MMS:
• 37% of customers with problems who don't
complain will remain loyal.
• If you get customers with problems to complain —
even if you don't solve the problem — about 46% will
remain loyal.
• If you get them to complain and solve the problem,
the loyalty factor jumps to 70%.
• Get them to complain and solve the problem quickly
— you'll see a loyalty rate of 95%.
ON ITEMS OVER $100:
• 9% who are upset but don't complain will remain
loyal.
• If they complain, but don't get the problem solved,
19% will remain loyal.
• If they complain and you solve the problem, 54%
will stick with you.
• Solve their problem quickly and you'll see an 84%
loyalty rate.
