FEBRUARY 1998
EMPLOYEES TAKE NOTE: MAJOR IN-HOUSE REASSIGNMENT OF
INSURANCE SER VICES
FROM THE DESK OF PHIL BOWERS:
Effective Monday, January 26th, all
insurance functions will be transferred from
Human Resources to the Finance Department.
Employee requests for service and
assistance involving health, dental, vision, and
disability are to be directed to Margie Poole in
Finance at 388-8208.
Matters dealing with Worker's
Compensation and general liability will also be
handled by Margie.
Please do not contact Doris Lee in Human
Resources regarding any of these insurance
areas as all information and documentation has
been transferred to Margie.
Every employees cooperation is appreciated
in making this transfer of duties successful.
FROM THE DESK OF PHIL BOWERS:
Performance evaluations, when properly
utilized, serve to benefit the City, the
supervisor, and the employee. The City profits
from the increased productivity because the
review of the employee's performance
provides an opportunity to discuss the
employee's strengths and weaknesses on a
person-to-person basis.
Employees profit by being made aware of
the supervisor's interest. Satisfaction is gained
from being told about their strong points and
they are afforded the opportunity to improve in
those areas where improvement is needed by
following the constructive suggestions of the
supervisor.
EMPLOYEE OF THE 1997 YEAR
PROFILE
By Kathy Brauer
Gloria Brown has been
with the Police
Department for
almost nine years,
When asked if
she liked
the work she is
doing, she
replied,
"I love it."
When Gloria
started
working
here she
said to herself
that this will only
be for a couple
of months and here she is almost nine years later,
still loving the job. She has been temporary
supervisor in dispatch almost a year now because of
Jay Bennett being banned to the Police Annex
because of the sick building affecting his health.
"The job is exciting, a challenge, not routine,
always something different" she replied. And she
finds it very rewarding.
Gloria is a single mother with 2 boys, Adrian and
Kendrick, aged 11 and 10. Her hobbies are reading
and fishing. Many times she rushes home from
work, packs up the fishing gear and her boys and
goes off fishing until it's dark. She likes to cook
too, at times helping her Mom in her restaurant.
Congratulations Gloria ....

The Cardiovascular System
Common Mvth by Mamie Poole
Beef is higher in cholesterol than fowl or seafood?
It all depends on the type and cut. Fish is generally a
heart -healthier alternative to meats because it tends
to be lower in overall saturated fat and higher in
heart -healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated
fats; but shellfish such as shrimp is high in
cholesterol. And while most parts of chicken and
turkey tend to have somewhat less cholesterol than
beef, the real advantage of fowl is that they have a
Iower content of saturated fat than beef. Some beef
cuts are actually lower in fat and cholesterol than
others. If you want to eat beef, choose leaner cuts
such as tenderloin, flank, top round, eye of round
and top sirloin.
