Looking Forward One major benefit of writing a will is that you can name your estate's executor—the person you'd like to carry out your final wishes. Your executor will be responsible for taking your estate through probate court, collecting your assets, paying your debts and distributing what's left to your heirs—according to the instructions in your will. Oualides of a good executor or Knowledge. The ideal executor would be part -lawyer, tax accountant, investment adviser and psychologist. Since few people wear all of these hats, your executor should be willing to work with experts if needed. Avoid appointing someone who insists on doing everything "solo"—the results could be disastrous for your heirs. ^r Trustworthiness. You need to have complete faith in your executor's competence and integrity. W, Communication skills. Choose someone who will be able to communicate with your heirs in clear, non technical language. If you haven't named an executor or you'd like to name somebody else, now s the time to update your will.❑ Safety The'Office Smarts' reminders: ✓ Always lock your car when you leave it—and when you're inside of it. ✓ After dark, walk to your car or to public transportation with a friend, or ask for a security escort. ✓ Report broken security fights in stairwells, garages, and outside. ✓ Know where your office fire extinguisher and fire exits are. ✓ Keep your wallet with you, or locked in a drawer or closet. Keep close track of the office keys in your possession. ✓ Keep the phone number of your companys security department posted by your office phone. ✓ Shred important papers before putting them into your wastebasket. ✓ Don't get into elevators with people who seem to be out of place, or who behave strangely. ✓ Don't use the stairs alone unless you're in a very secure building. ✓ Be cautious when using restrooms that are in isolated places, or that are open to the public. ✓ If you bank for your business, vary your route and your times of departure. Keep the bank bag under wraps.❑ Golden Nu2eet Four groups of people (farmers, factory workers, executives and doctors) were asked if they needed more income to make ends meet, and if so, how much. Every income group—from $15,000 annually to $150,000—responded that they needed about 10% more. —George Gallup survey
