SMOKING "Smoking is today's leading cause of preventable death, killing more people annually than the combined death toll from AIDS, cocaine, heroin, alcohol, fire, automobile accidents, homicide and suicide. Studies conclude that workplace smoking not only is hazardous to the health of an organization's work force, it also can be hazardous to the company's financial health. The American Lung Association estimates that the average employee who smokes costs companies between $500 and $5,000 per year in increased insurance premiums, higher absenteeism and lost productivity. A study of 2,537 newly hired Boston postal workers averaging 30.2 years of age, revealed that smokers were absent 34% more often than non- smokers, were 40% more likely to suffer occupational injuries than nonsmokers, and had 55% more discipline -related problems than nonsmokers. A late 1980s study of 46,000 Du Pont employees showed that each year the average smoker cost the company an additional $960 in medical claims and sick days."
