BUILDING A HEALTHY HEART Heart disease is a leading cause of death and disability for both men and women inmost industrialized countries around the world. While some risk factors can't be changed - your age, sex, and family history - there is a lot you can do to reduce your risk. Your blood pressure is a key, indicator of your overall health. If your pressure is too high, getting it under control, and keeping it there, will lower your risk of heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and other serious diseases. Did you know.... High blood pressure has no symptoms. That's why doctors call it the silent killer. High blood pressure strains the heart by forcing it to pump extra -hard. And the high pressure also damages the blood vessels that go to the brain, eyes, kidneys and other organs of the body. Self-defense... The only way to discover whether you have high blood pressure is to get it checked at least once a year. The higher number (called systolic) is the pressure when your heart contracts; the lower one (diastolic), when it relaxes between beats. Did you know... Blood pressure doesn't need to be very high to lead to deadly heart disease. Most of the people who die of pressure - linked heart disease have so called "mild" hypertension of 140/90 to 159/99. Self-defense.... if your blood pressure is any higher than normal, work with your doctor to lower it. Keep trim, exercise often, eat less fat and salt, and consume more potassium -loaded fruits and calcium -rich low-fat dairy products. If these lifestyle changes aren't enough, your doctor may prescribe blood pressure medicine. If so, be sure to take it as directed... and keep taking it for as long as it's prescribed. Did you know.... Dietary fat may play a much larger role than salt in the development of high blood pressure: The reason: Salt drives up blood pressure in less than half of people. But fat may do so in everyone, because it can harden blood vessels, which in turn raises blood pressure. Fat also leads to weight gain, one of the biggest causes of high blood pressure. Self-defense.... Eat less at - from oil, meat and whole -milk dairy products. And together with your low-fat diet, exercise regularly to help shed any extra pounds.
