SICK LEAVE ABUSE
Are you a "sniper?" Do you call in once a
month for an unscheduled sick day? Do you
consider yourself a "sucker" if you don't
use all of your paid sick leave every month?
If you fit one or both of the descriptions
above, do you realize that:
-your co-workers have to pick up
the slack and perform part of
your work while you are out?
-you may be putting your continued
employment with the City at risk?
-you may not be paid for an
unexcused sick day?
-you are putting yourself (and
your family) in jeopardy should
you become ill and need several
days of sick leave (and not have
it)?
-you won't be eligible for the
City's sick leave bonus program?
Everyone has legitimate needs for sick leave
usage from time to time and that is why sick
leave is provided as a benefit. But people
who abuse this benefit cost the City and
themselves money. How can you avoid being
a "sniper"? Take sick time only when
necessary. Try to schedule medical
appointments after working hours. Most
importantly, take care of yourself. Get
enough sleep, eat right and exercise at
least three times a week.
