Call Joe O'Rourke for more information. See you there! CITY MATTERS May, 1993 NAME THE NEWSLETTER CONTEST Thanks to the MANY employees who contributed suggestions for the name of our new newsletter. It was a hard decision to choose between so many witty and creative names. The winner of the contest was Barbara Corapi, for her sug- gestion "City Matters". Thanks Barbara! NEWS On Monday, May 3rd, the City took over the Park Place Water Treatment Plant from the County Utilities Department. On Friday, May 7th, several ninth grade students from the Sebastian River Middle School will be seen following City employees around. This is all part of "Shadow" Day, a career enrichment program where students learn first hand the day-to-day activities of a field they have expressed an interest in. EMPLOYEE NEWS Sad News - Sally (from the City Manager's Office) Grunzweig's mother passed away early Thursday, April 29th. Our condolences to Sally and her family. Pat (from Utilities) Brown's daughter was in a serious auto accident and is currently recovering. We all wish her a speedy recovery. Mildred (from the Golf Course) Sims and Kathy (from Public Works) Martin are both out on leaves of absences for about a month. GET READY FOR CHRISTMAS! Employees are expected to exercise due care in the course of their work to prevent injury to themselves, to their co-workers and the public. Some suggestions to follow: 1. Report all unsafe conditions and acts to your supervisor. 2. Be individually responsible to keep yourself, fellow employees, equipment and the general public, free from accidents. 3. Keep work areas clean and orderly at all times. 4. Follow prescribed procedures during an emergency. 5. Report all accidents immediately to your supervisor. 6. Be certain that you understand instructions before beginning work. 7. Learn to lift and handle materials properly. 8. Avoid engaging in any horseplay and avoid distracting others. 9. Knave how and where needed medical help may be obtained. 10. Use only the prescribed equipment for the job and handle it properly. 11. Wear required protective equipment when performing your job duties. 12. Set an example of safe working habits and follow all safety regulations. HOLIDAY Have a safe and happy Memorial Day on Monday, May 31, 1993. DEPAP"(ENTAL ARTICLE This month's Departmental article is on the City Clerk's office. Kay O'Halloran is the City Clerk; Sally Maio is the Deputy City Clerk; and Barbara Corapi, Linda Lohsl, and JoAnne Sandberg all provide adminis- trative support. The Clerk's office coordinates city council meetings and keeps records of all public meetings. They are also in charge of collecting fees for occupational licenses, garage sale permits, home occupational licenses, special use permits and City of Sebastian fees. The Clerk's office also coordinates the renting of City buildings or parks such as the Yacht Club, Community Center, and Riverview Park, as well as coordinates all the City elections. They also advertise for vacant positions within the City and provide a central mail and phone system for the City. The Clerk's office coordinates all bids submitted to the City and keeps all official records pertaining to City business. Both Kay and Sally will be attending the International Institute of Municipal Clerks Annual Meeting in�Orlando from May 23rd through May 27th. This conference brings together clerks from all over the world for a week of education, sharing of effective programs and fellowship. Almost a thousand clerks from practically every state in the U.S., in addition to most of the Canadian provinces, Australia, England, Wales, Arabia, Israel, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand and South Africa will attend this conference.
