HomeMy WebLinkAboutJuneCvCl 0 City Matters 1 .., IG June 1995 From the Desk Wendy Widmann Sick leave abuse seems to be on everyone's mind a lot these days. Are you one of "those" employees who take off 8 hours every time you have accrued 8 hours? Do you frequently become "sick" right before work on Friday or Monday? Do you realize that your absences affect your co-workers who have to perform some of your work? Everyone has legitimate needs to use sick leave every now and then, whether it is due to a doctor's visit, a sick child, or a bad case of Montezuma's revenge. That's why you have sick leave benefits - to provide pay for those days that you can't, because of circumstances beyond your control, attend work. When you use your sick leave every time you accrue some more hours, you need to take a good look at yourself to determine if there aren't other problems that are preventing you from saving your sick leave. Perhaps you have money problems and argue with your spouse. There are credit counseling agencies that will help you, free of charge, to straighten out your finances. Maybe you don't feel good about yourself because of Family problems - family and personal counseling are also available. Or maybe you have an alcohol or drug abuse problem that affects your ability to come into work on iviondays. Avoiding dealing with the problem will not help. Take a long hard look at yourself and see if you are an abuser - - and take some positive steps to improve the problem before your supervisor has to take some disciplinary action against you!
