COMMITTEE MEMBER ISSUES John Kanfoush stated that the one handicapped parking spot at the annex Post Office on 512 is not conveniently placed for handicapped access to the building. He also stated that trees have been planted at the Creative Playgound where we had requested that van accessible handicapped parking be installed. Phillip Foster mentioned an incident that took place during the holidays. His van was parked in a handicapped spot next to a striped no -parking area. When he returned to his van with his handicapped daughter there was a car illegally parked there which made it difficult to access the van. The police were summoned and even though the car was illegally parked no tickets were issued. HANDICAPPED SELF-EVALUATION COMMITTEE MEETING JANUARY 11, 1995 PAGE 2 Discussion on this subject followed withthe consensus being to discuss this incident with the Chief of Police to see that the police officers enforce the parking laws both fOr handicapped and non-handicapped parking. OLD BUSINESS CODE ENFORCEMENT -F~%NDICAPPED PARKING: The police volunteer program was discussed and anyone is able to join as long as they are able to perform the functions of the job which require a 40 hour training program. Edra Young inquired if the lack of handicapped parking at Walgreen's at Riverwalk had been discussed with the County. She would also like to know where fires are located when there is sufficient smoke in the area. STATUS OF RENOVATIONS: Public Works will go out for bid to move the restroom doors in City Hall and a lower shelf will be added to a portion of the front counter toaCcommodate wheelchairs. The Community Center, Yacht Club and parks will here-evaluated. It was suggested that someone from thePolice Department be invited to our meeting to discuss parking, the volunteer progam and potential fires. 5. NEW BUSINESS REVIEW NOMINATIONS FOR VACANT POSITION: George Schum was the only person to turn in a application for the permanent vacancy. A motion was made by Edra Young and seconded by Phillip Foster to recommend to City Council the appointment of GeOrge Schum t° the regular member position vacated by Susan Nalepa. Voice vote taken - all in favor. Both the resignation of SusanNalepa and the appointment of George Schum will be on the City Council January 25, 1995 Agenda. CODE ENFORCEMENT - PRIVATE SECTOR: Bruce Cooper was scheduled to speak but he became ill and was not able to find a replacement at the last minute so this will have to be postponed to a later date. It was decided it would be beneficial to have both Bruce Cooper and a member of the Police Department attend the same meeting. The volunteers will be given our check-list form to fill out when violations are seen. They will then be forwarded to Code Enforcement for follow-up, HANDICAPPED SELF-EVALUATION COMMITTEE MEETING JANUARY 11, 1995 PAGE 3 6.
