MINUTES OF MEETING OF
HANDICAPPED SELF-EVALUATION COMMITTEE
APRIL !8.: __1.98_.8
MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER BY CHAIRMAN GEORGE SCHUM AT 2:08 P.M.
PRESENT:
ABSENT:
HOWARD CARSWELL
CATHERINE MITTEN
DAVID GOAN
CHAIRMAN GEORGE SCHUM
MARY DE CHAINE
MOTTON BY MRS. MITTEN, SECONDED BY MR. GOAN, TO APPROVE THE MINUTES
OF THE MEETING OF JULY 16, 1986. CARRIED.
OLD BUSINESS:
CHAIRMAN SCHUM ADVISED THAT THE CITY OWNS THE PROPERTY
AROUND THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUILDING AND RECENTLY
PURCHASED AN ADDITIONAL PIECE OF GROUND THERE WHICH HAS
A HOUSE ON IT. AFTER THE HOUSE HAS BEEN REMOVED AND THE
CITY STARTS WORK ON ENLARGING THE PARKING FACILITIES, THEN
HANDICAPPED PA~KING CAN BE DISCUSSED WITH THEM.
NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE AT THE AMBULANCE SQUAD ABOUT PRO-
VIDING A RAMP AND iT WAS AGREED THAT AT THE END OF THIS
MEETING, THE COMMITTEE WOULD GO OVER TO THE AMBULANCE SQUAD
BUILDING AND CHECK INTO THE WIDTH OF THE DOOR ALSO.
COMMITTEE MEMBERS' MATTERS:
MRS. MITTEN MENTIONED THAT AT THE CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH
ON THUNDERBIRD DRIVE THERE IS A RAMP BUT THERE IS ALSO A
STEP AT THE END OF THE RAMP WHICH MAKES IT INACCESSIBLE TO
THE HANDICAPPED. SINCE THE BUILDING IS USED AS A POLLING
PLACE, CHAIRMAN SCHUM STATED HE WOULD GO AND LOOK AT IT
AFTER THIS MEETING WAS OVER AND INVITED ANYONE ELSE TO GO, TOO.
COMMITTEE MEMBERS' MATTERS: (Cont'd.)
MR. CARSWELL STATED THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE POLICE
DEPARTMENT BE MORE OBSERVANT OF CARS PARKED IN HANDICAPPED
PARKING AREAS. IF WARNINGS WERE GIVEN BY THE POLICE DEPART-
MENT, IT MIGHT BE HELPFUL. CHAIRMAN SCHUM OFFERED TO TALK
TO POLICE CHIEF-CARTER ABOUT THIS SITUATION.
NEW BUSINESS:
A. ACCESS TO BOATS FROM BOAT DOCK FOR HANDICAPPED PERSONS
THERE FOLLOWED A DISCUSSION ON WHAT COULD BE DONE TO PROVIDE
EASIER ACCESS TO THE BOAT DOCKS AND BOATS. CHAIRMAN SCHUM
ADVISED THAT THE MAIN STREET DOCK WAS GOING TO BE CLOSED FOR
REPAIRS. THE COMMITTEE RFCOMMENDED THAT A RAMP BE INSTALLED
INSTEAD OF A STEP, AND THAT THE NEWFINGER DOCKS SHOULD BE
5' WIDE WITH A HANDRAIL ON ONE SIDE.
ALSO DISCUSSED WAS THE FEASIBILITY OF INSTALLING A FLOATING
DOCK (SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE) OR SOME SORT OF CHAIR AND HARNESS
ARRANGEMENT ON A SWINGING DAVIT.
MOTION BY MRS. MITTEN, SECONDED BY MR. GOAN, THAT MR. CARSWELL
DRAW UP SPECIFICATIONS FOR'A DAVIT AND LOOK INTO THE COST OF A
COMMERCIAL DAVIT. CARRIED.
MR. CARSWELL REMARKED THAT A LOT OF WORK HAS BEEN DONE AT THE
YACHT CLUB AND EVERYTHING HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP TO STANDARD FOR
THE HANDICAPPED. HE SUGGESTED THAT THE DAVIT SHOULD BE PLACED
'THERE RATHER THAN AT MAIN STREET AND THEN THE WHOLE AREA WOULD
BE IN CONFORMANCE. THE COMMITTEE AGREED WITH THIS SUGGESTION.
MEETING ADJOURNED AT 3:00 P.M.
