CATHERINE MITTEN HOWARD CARSWELL MOTION TO ACCEPT THE READING OF THE NOVEMBER 13, 1985 MEETING BY DELL CHINN, SECONDED BY CATHERINE MITTEN. ALL AYES: MOTION CARRIED. OLD DISCUSSION BY GEORGE SCHUM TO HAVE CITY COUNCIL ADDRESS PROBLEM AS THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS BATHROOMS ARE FINISHED NOW ACCORDING TO HECTOR Fi{ANCO. THE LETTER BY CATHERINE MITTEN WAS READ BY THE CHAIRPERSON ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM OF GETTING BUSINESSES TO COMPLY WITH HANDICAPPED LAWS. A SUGGESTION OF REWARDING BUSINESSES WITH PLAQUES OR CERTIFICATES AND SOME PUBLICITY AND A COMMENDATION BY CITY COUNCIL WAS INCLUDED IN THIS. (SPECIFICALLY DEALING WITH "GRANDFATHERED" BUSINESSES). MOTION BY CATHERINE MITTEN~ SECONDED BY DELL CHINN TO TAKE A PROPOSAL TO THE MAYOR AND THE COUNCILMEN TO TAKE THE CHALLANGE TO HAVE A HANDICAP APPOINTED TO THEM OR BE PUT INTO A WHEELCHAIR WHILE THEY FUNTION IN THEIR CAPACITY AS COUNCILPERSONS FOR A DAY. sPEcIFICALLY, ON A WEDNESDAY (CITY COUNCIL NIGHT). THEY WILL BE EXPECTED TO FUNCTION ENTIRELY WITH THEIR HANDICAP WITH NO EXCEPTIONS; DRESSING, EATING AND DRINKING, ETC., TO EMPHASIZE THE DIFFICULTY OF THE HANDICAPPED IN THE BARRIERS THAT ARISE EVERYWHERE'.THE MESSAGE SHOULD BE A POSITIVE ONE TO THE CITY THAT WE SUPPORT THE HANDICAPPED IN THEIR ENDEAVOR TO BE INDEPENDENT. MOTION AMENDED BY CATHERINE MITTEN, SECONDED BY MARY DE CHAINE TO MAKE DELL A HONORARY LIFETIME MEMBER OF THE HANDICAPPED SELF- EVALUATION COMMITTEE IN ADDITION. ALL AYES: MOTION CARRIED. IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT MEMBERSHIP IS OPEN TO FILL DELL'S ANY NOMINATIONS SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION CHAIRPERSON. CHAIR. APPRECIATION ~Q ~VOLUNTEERILY FOR CATHERINE MITTEN AGREED TO DISCUSS THIS MATTER WITH MAYOR L. GENE HARRIS SO THE COMMITTEE MAY IMPLEMENT THE PROPOSAL. DISCUSSION OF PROBLEMS WITH BATHROOMS IN CITY HALL BY DELL CHiNN, sHOWED THAT THE LADIES RooM DOOR IS TOO TIGHT. THE MEN'S ROOM IS TOTALLY iNACCESSIBLE. A NEW DOORWAY MUST BE CUT THROUGH WITH NO TURNS INTO THE BATHROOM. MOTION BY CATHERINE MITTEN, SECONDED BY DELL CHINN TO REALIGN THE DOORWAY AND THERE BE NO TURNS IN THE ACCESSWAY. ALL AYES: MOTION CARRIED. DISCUSSION BY MARY DE CHAINE ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM OF ACCESSABILITY AT THE SQUAD BUILDING. A HANDICAP RAMP NEEDS TO BE CUT AND ALSO THE DOORWAY NEEDS TO BE EVALUATED TO SEE IF IT COMPLIES. CHAIRPERSON GEORGE SCHUM WILL DISCUSS THIS WiTH HECTOR FRANCO AND ALSO THE PROBLEM OF HANDICAPPED PARKING. MOTION BY MARY DE CHAiNE, SECONDED BY CATHERINE MITTEN, TO REQUEST A RAMP AND HANDICAPPED PARKING FACILITIES AT THE AMBULANCE SQUAD. A SUGGESTION OF DISCOVERING WHO OWNS THE BUILDING AND REQUESTING THEIR HELP WAS MADE. GEORGE SCHUM WILL LOOK INTO THIS MATTER. MOTION BY DELL CHINN, SECONDED BY MARY DE CHAINE, TO REQUEST THE OWNERS OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUILDING MOVE A LOG AT THE u.S.%l, LOCATION AND APPLY ASPHALT UP TO THE SIDEWALK AT U.S.%i AND LABEL THE PARKING PLACE "HANDICAPPED" (WITH FINE PROVISIONS). DISCUSSION FOLLOWED. (NO VOTE TAKEN) DELL CHINN ANNOUNCED ACCESSABLE. THAT THE CHAMBER BATHROOMS ARE NOW MOTION BY CATHERINE MITTEN, SECONDED BY DELL CHINN TO ADJOURN THE MEETING AT 4:00 P.M.
