INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A spill of
potentially hazardous pool chlorine and
acid on U.S. 1 north of Vero Beach, shut
down the highway in both directions
during morning rush hours Tuesday.
Three people were transported to a
hospital because of exposure to the
fumes, according to the Indian River
County Sheri's Oce.
That includes the driver of the truck
and two people who stopped to help,
said Lt. Thom Raulen.
Meanwhile hundreds of vehicles
backed up on the highway.
As a precaution, motorists were di-
verted onto other roads including two-
lane Old Dixie Highway. Winds were
blowing south and U.S. 1 was closed
from the scene of the accident, at 57th
Street, south to Indian River Boulevard.
Containers of pool chemicals littered
a portion of the southbound lanes.
The spill ended up being limited to 20
gallons and reghters with Indian Riv-
er Fire Rescue, who wore special protec-
tive gear, handled it by hosing it down.
Chlorine fumes "are heavier than air,"
said Brian Burkeen, assistant chief for
Indian River County Fire Rescue. "They
hug the ground, making them hard to
dissipate."
Trac was diverted for about 1 1/2
hours after the incident at 8:15 a.m.
Tuesday.
"It appears the driver of the pool
cleaning truck lost control of the vehicle
that was towing the trailer," Raulen said.
The truck ended up in the highway's
median with one tire o.
The identity of the truck driver
wasn't available.
In August, a pool chlorinating system
leak forced the evacuation of a beach
hotel and restaurant at Sexton Plaza in
Vero Beach.
That incident had limited physical ef-
fects on a small number of people, ac-
cording to Indian River County Fire Res-
cue ocials.
Five people who complained of
breathing problems refused treatment.
It could have been more severe.
"Chlorine gas is not something to
mess with," said Fire Rescue Battalion
Chief Cory Richter. "It can do serious
damage to lungs if enough chlorine
fumes are inhaled."
