Brevard Litter Quitter Program Representative Recommendation: Submitted for Board Member Review Background: A Representative from Brevard’s Litter Quitter Program will provide a synopsis of their program If Agenda Item Requires Expenditure of Funds: Total Cost: n/a Attachments: Summary Litter Quitter’s qualification system City Manager Authorization: ________________________________ Date: _________________ Litter Quitter Program “Businesses Against Waste” Litter Quitter is a Keep Brevard Beautiful program — backed by support from Brevard Zoo— that uses partnerships with local businesses as a means of reducing common sources of litter, like single-use plastics, plastic bags and polystyrene (Styrofoam). Bronze Level:  Ask-first straw policy  Switch to a sustainable straw option (paper, metal, hard reusable plastic, etc.)  Encourage customers to bring their own reusable straw Silver Level:  Switch plastic bags to paper bags  Encourage customers to bring their own reusable bags  Switch plastic utensils to a sustainable option (corn-based, paper, reusable, etc.) Gold Level:  Switch styrofoam cups to a sustainable option (corn-based, paper, reusable, etc,)  Switch to-go containers to a sustainable option (corn-based, recycled plastic, paper, etc.)  Encourage customers to bring their own to-go containers  Deck netting for waterfront businesses Our trained public outreach volunteers are out hitting the streets in hopes of convincing their favorite local restaurants to make one small, cost-effective business practice change to reduce litter. In exchange, businesses receive free marketing promotion, discounts on sustainable products, and networking/education opportunities. NRB Earth Day/ Arbor Day Celebration: April 27th, 2019. – ACTION ITEM Recommendation: Board Members review event responsibilities and divide up amongst themselves. Background: The NRB Earth Day/ Arbor Day Event is the Board’s annual community outreach event, which combines nature-themed vendors, environmental organizations, and children’s activities to promote the Board’s mission of environmental protection and education. Food and Retail Vendors: Reach out to all previous and potential vendors in the area with an invite to participate (ASAP), serve as primary contact throughout the planning process, ensure that all of their permit and application requirements are met, and direct the participants to their location upon arrival. 2. Government and Private Environmental Organizations: Reach out to all previous and potential participant groups in the area with an invite to participate, serve as primary contact throughout the planning process, direct the participants to their location upon arrival. 3. Marketing: Disperse flyer around the City and to all local schools, contact local radio, television stations and newspapers to add event to community calendars. 4. Activities: Solicit groups to sponsor environmental-themed children’s activities, organize the materials and supplies needed for the NRB’s activities, collaborate with liaison for purchases needed, or submit check request for reimbursement of any supplies. 5. Entertainment: Contact previous and solicit new musicians and entertainers, stay within allotted budget, submit check requests for their fees 2 weeks before event, serve as primary contact throughout the planning process, direct the participants to their location upon arrival. 6. Volunteers: Contact local schools and organizations to secure volunteers to assist with activities, vendor check-in, and litter. This is a busy time of the year for volunteers- you must secure them early!
