GENERAL NOTES
1. SCOPE OF WORK.. Contractor shall provide all materials, labor,
equipment, utilities and incidentals necessary to construct'
the control structure cortiplete as described herein, including
removal and disposal of the existing structure and including
temporary facilities to contain and divert the upstream vators
during construction; and to complete said work within the timtc
stipulated in .the contract documents, which time shall bE-.of
the essence of the contract.
2. BASIS OF PAYMENT. Payment shall be made at the contract unit
prices bid for the actual quantities put into place and
accepted. Quantities.listed in the schedule of bid items are
estimates onlN7 and actual final quantities may be higher or
lower.
3. SEQUENCE OF CONSTRUCTION. Work shall be performed in the
following order:
A. Construct temporary intake riser and diversion piuc.
B. Install temporaty sheet pile dam.
C. Remove and dispose of the existing control struct,.:rc.
D. De -water the construction area. Use earth berming
as necessary to keep the tailwaters• from the construc-
tion area. (See profile, sheet 5.)
E. Construct the new control structure.
F. Remove temporaty sheet pile dam.
G. Remove intake riser and diversion pipe.
4. TEMPORARY INTAKE RISER AND DIVERSION PIPE. Pipe may be new
or used (sound condition), aluminum or steel. Placement of -
pipe (trenching, pipelaying and backfilling) shall be per-
formed in segments starting at the discharge end, to prevent.
-scape of the upstream waters through the pipe trench.
L.he proposed structure is completed, the temporary pipe s::all
be similarly removed in segments. Slope protection may be
left in place. After removal, pipes shall be the property
of the contractor. All costs incidental to the placeir, ent,
maintenance anC. removal of these items, including slope prc-
tection, shall be included in the lump sum. price bid for
"Ter,.porary Steel. Sheet -Pile Dam and Diversion Pipe, Compl-t-C".
_ . TEMPORARY STEEL SHEET -PILE DAM. Sheet -piling shall be des <,r:ec'
and placed with due regard to the critical nature of the
installation 'and. the serious consecuences which would res_1
fro^: its failure. Contractor shall submit shop drawi nas
showina the tvpe of sheet -piling to be used, dimensions,
embedment and structural calculations for review by the
Engineer. All costs incidental to the placement, maintenance
and removal of this item shall be included in the lump sum
price bid for "TeFporary Steel Sheet -Pile Dam and Diversion
6. REMOV"L OF EXISTING STRUCTURE. Before submitting his bid,
the.Bidder shall examine the existing structure and satisfy
himself as to the amount of work required to remove and
dispose of it. This work shall be performed for the contract
lump sum bid for "Existing Steel.Control Structure and Concrete
Slab to be Removed and Disposed of".
7. PRECAST CONCRETE SHEET PILE, TOE WALL AND SPILLWAY UNITS.
Units shall be cast..ture to the dimensions shown. Units shall
have smooth form finish on one side, smooth trowelled finish
on the other side. Concrete shall be well vibrated to elimi-
nate honeycombing and -voids. Reinforcing steel. shall be
accurately positioned to provide maximum concrete cover over
the steel. Units shall be set into place by water -jetting,
in the order indicated by the identification numbers. (First
P1, then P2, etc.) Care shall be taken to maintain proper
alignment of the units during jetting. owner reserves the
right to request modifications to the length of units, due
to conditions encountered in the field. PaN-ment shall be
made based on the actual length of sheet pile units in place.
S. GROUTING OF UNITS. After all 6" ("P") units are in place,
these shall be arouted. The grouting keyway- shall first be
cleaned of soil clown to the level of the channel bottom.
(By flushing with water.) Then the keyway shall be filled
with high -strength hydraulic grout, using some method to
prevent escape of the grout through the joints. Acceptable
methods incl,ee: 1) Pouring the grout into a neoprene
rubber tube i::se=rted into the kel-Tay and 2 ) seang the
Joints with packing before filling the kergay with grout.
Cost of grout shall be included in the cost of 6" thick sheet
pile units.
0. CAST IN PLACE CONCRETE. Concrete shall attain a minimum
Cc)mpressive strength of 4000 psi at 28 days. Reinforcing
steel shall be Grade 60 (60 ksi). Concrete shall be mixed,
formed and placed in.accordance with all applicable ACI
standards. Form'
shall be straight, true and have smooth
surfaces. Areas to receive concrete shall be free from water.
Special care shall be exercised to eliminate voids, honey-
combina and inac-ecuate cover over reinforcing steel. The
concrete shall•beadequately vibrated to insure a dense,
water tiQh t surface. All costs incidental to the cast - in -
place concrete (formwork, reinforcing, concrete and placing)
shall be included in the contract unit price bid per cubic
yard for "Structural Concrete, Poured In Place, Including
Reinforcement".
10. HANDRAILS. Handrails shall be paid for per linear foot of
handrail assembly, in place.
FLASH BOARD RISERS. Boards shall be straight, true and free
from imperfections which would adversely affect their strength
or sealing_ ability. Payment shall be based on the actual
of buard - feet of lumber in placc.
12. DRAWDOWN VALVE ASSEMBLY. See detail, sheet 4.
13. UNSUITABLE MATERIAL. Upon removal of the existing structure
and de -water of the construction area, any channel -bottom
material judged by the Engineer to be unsuitable shall be
removed and replaced with clean course sand. All costs
incidental therto shall be included in the contract unit j
price bid ,per cubic yard for "Unsuitable Material To Be
Removed and Replaced With Sand".
i
14. POLYPROPYLENE FILTER FABRIC. May be woven or spun.. Pay-:
ment shall be made for the actual quantity of material used.
15. INCIDENTALS (ITEM 12). This item shall include any con-
struction shown he rein which is not specifically included in
any bid item, or any minor items necessary to complete the
structure as shown. It is not intended to cover substantial
