R E S O L U T I O N
W H E R E A 5, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION HAS DECIDED TO
CONTINUE THE AMTRAK TRAIN BETWEEN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS AND MIAMI, FLORIDA;
A N D,
W H E R E A S, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION IS NOW SEEKING
"MAYS TO MAKE THE RUN MORE PROFITABLE; A N D,
W H E R E A 5, THE CITIES ON THE EAST COAST OF FLORIDA SOUTH OF
JACKSONVILLE HAVE BEEN "WITHOUT PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE FOR THE PAST TEN
YEARS; A N D
W H E R E A S, THE TOURIST INFLUX HAS NOT ONLY GREATLY INCREASED
DURING THESE PAST TEN YEARS, BUT ALSO HAS CHANGED IN SEASONABLE HABITS; �
A N D
W H E R E A S, MORE VISITORS COME TO FLORIDA IN THE SUMMER THAN
FORMERLY IN WINTER BECAUSE OF THE TREMENDOUS INCREASE IN POPULATION AND
POPULARITY OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA;
N OW, THEREFORE, 8E I T R E S 0 L V E D THAT THE CITY
OF SEBASTIAN DOES HEREBY PETITION THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
CONSIDER CHANGING THE ROUTE SOUTH OF JACKSONVILLE TO REACH MIAMI BY :SAY OF
THE FLORIDA EAST COAST RAILROAD TRACKS; A ROUTE THAT IS 54 MILES SHORTER
AND WILL SERVICE THE ACUTE NEEDS OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO AT THE MOMENT
ARE WITHOUT PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE, THEREBY CHANGING A LOSING OPERATION
TO A PROFITABLE RUN WITH MINIMUM EXPENSE.
