Backaround: If Agenda Item Reauires Expenditure of Funds: Total Cost: n/a Attachments: Veterans Advisory Board Meeting Minutes from January 9'h, 2023 VETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES MONDAY, JANUARY 9, 3:00 P.M. CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS 1225 MAIN ST., SEBASTIAN FL 32976 I. Chairman Gary Shaw called the Veterans Advisory Committee meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. IL The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. III. Roll Call Gary Spiecker, American Legion Member Gary Shaw, VFW Commander Kim Paskiewicz, VFW Auxiliary Member Not Present: Neil Baumgartner, VFW Member — Excused Stephen Hamerlin, American Legion Member -- Unexcused Also Present: Brian Benton, Director of Leisure Services Joseph Perez, AV Technical Assistant Janet Graham, Technical Writer IV. Meeting Chair Makes Announcements -- None V. Aaenda Modifications -- None VI. Aooroval of Minutes — Auaust 1. 2022 Chairman Shaw called for a motion to approve the Minutes from October 10, 2022. A motion approving the Minutes of October 10, 2022 as presented was made by Mr. Spiecker, seconded by Ms. Paskiewicz, and approved unanimously via voice vote. VII. Unnai§hed Business — None Vill. Public Input Chairman Shaw introduced Rick Lewis who will speak on "Wreaths Across America:' VETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE PAGE 2 MINUTES OF MEETING OF JANUARY 9, 2023 Mr. Lewis stated that it was a very good day when it came to laying the wreaths. The ceremony was probably the best they have had in the time that this has been done. He asked that it be put on the schedule for 2023 to occur on December 161h, 2023. Mr. Shaw said that he was not able to attend. The program looked very nice, and this event is going to be added to the annual schedule, so it will be in the rotation every year. There being nothing further, Chairman Shaw moved to New Business. IX. New Business A. 2023 Veterans Events and Responsibilities Discussion Mr. Spiecker stated that on February 12, 2023 Post 10 is going to do a poker run. The proceeds will go towards a new roof for their facility. Mr. Spiecker said that on St. Patrick's Day the American Legion will have a dinner. Mr. Spiecker also stated there will be a sock hop this coming Saturday evening. The tickets are $5.00. There will be 50s and 60s music, all provided by the Post. B. Four Chaplains Memorial Event 1. Sunday, February 5v' at 2:00 p.m. 2. That event is organized by Larry Wapnick. He has historically handled that event. X. Staff Matters Mr. Benton reviewed the list of the events that will take place at the Veterans Memorial. He asked for clarification of which events will be organized by which group for 2023 as follows: A. Memorial Day Event 1. Last year this event was organized by the American Legion. 2. The VFW will hand that event for 2023. It will be held on May 291h. B. July 4U Ceremony 1. Historically, the Lions Club has done a small ceremony at the flagpole, and they will continue with that if they choose. VETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE PAGE 3 MINUTES OF MEETING OF JANUARY 9, 2023 C. Patriot Day Ceremony (9/11) 1. September 11U 2. In the past it was organized by a veterans group. Then it went to the Police Department, and this past year it was back with one of the veterans groups. This year it will be organized by the American Legon. D. Veterans Day Ceremony 1. November 11rh at 11:00 a.m. 2. Event will be organized by the American Legion. E. Pead Harbor Remembrance Ceremony 1. December 71° at 12:30 p.m. 2. Event organized by the VFW. F. Wreaths Across America 1. December 16, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. The noon ceremony will be at the Veterans Memorial. 2. Event organized by Rick Lewiis. XI. Board or Committee Member Matters Chairman Shaw feels certain that a representative of all the religious denominations can be obtained for the Four Chaplains event. Mr. Benton said he will contact Mr. Wapnick in this regard. Chairman Shaw said there are two people, one with each organization, who do great -looking flyers that can be put out anywhere, and he feels certain one or both of them would be happy to design a flyer for that event. Mr. Spiecker suggested contacting the Chamber of Commerce. They have an outside bulletin board, and he suggested getting word to the Chamber suggesting they put something out on that bulletin board regarding the event. XII. Items for the Next Acenda and Date: April 3rd. 2023 at 3:00 o.m. Mr. Benton asked that, if anyone has anything for the agenda, to let him know, and he will see to it. AT 3:14 P.M., THE MEETING WAS TERMINATED DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES.
