HomeMy WebLinkAboutShort-term Disability MemoGTYOF SE T AN HOME OF PELICAN ISLAND MEMORANDUM ✓ TO: All Employees FROM: Cynthia Watson, Human Resources Director V DATE: June 27, 2023 RE: New Benefit - Short Term Disability The City of Sebastian is now offering a new benefit --- Short Tenn Disability. The Short Term Disability Benefit is through Lincoln Financial. This is the same insurance company the City uses for Life Insurance and Long Term Disability. The City will be paying for the benefit. The new benefit takes effect for all employees eligible for benefits on July 1, 2023. Any employee hired during the month of May 2023 or after will receive the benefit on the first of the month after completing the elimination period of sixty (60) days. Below are a few details regarding our Short-term Disability Plan. 1. Short-term Disability insurance helps you meet your financial obligations while you're recovering from an injury, illness, surgery, or childbirth. 2. You will receive a cash benefit of 60% of your weekly salary (up to $1,500) when you are out of work for up to 13 weeks due to injury, illness, surgery, or recovery from childbirth. 3. You will receive a partial cash benefit if you can only do part of your job or work part time. 4. Sickness Elimination Period — You must be out of work for 7 calendar days due to an illness before you can collect disability benefits. You can begin collecting benefits on day 8. 5. Accident Elimination Period - You must be out of work for 7 calendar days due to an accidental injury before you can collect disability benefits. You can begin collecting benefits on day 8. (You cannot collect Short-term Disability if you are collecting Workers' Compensation.) 6. You will be able to make up the 40% difference from your sick -time accrual. However, if you have used all of your sick -rime accrual, you will be permitted to use your vacation accrual. You must use your sick time accrual first. You cannot make any more than your normal base weekly wage or your pre -disability earnings. Please notify Human Resources as soon as possible in the event the benefit is needed.
