CITY COUNCIL CHAMBER 1225 MAIN STREET, SEBASTIAN, FLORIDA Staff Present Brian Benton, Leisure Services Director Cathy Testa, Records Specialist Jeanette Williams, City Clerk Participants Present Marc Gingras Rich O'Connor Michelle Morris Raymond Osborne Patti Williams 1. ORDER The Centennial Celebration meeting was called to order at 10:02am 2. REPORTS A. Staff Items a. Minutes Approval MOTION by Ms. Testa and a SECOND by Ms. J. Williams to approve the minutes from May 15, 2023. MOTION approved by unanimous voice vote. B. Marketing & Promotion a. Discuss centennial kevchain Ms. J. Williams presented a coin with a keychain attached. She said the company she is working with to make our centennial coin can make the keychain for $1.50 more. The group agreed that we should purchase keychains to sell as well as the coin. Mr. Osborne join the meeting, he was involved in Cape Canaveral's fifty year celebration. He brought some ideas with him to share with the group. He said Cape Canaveral had a stamp made that they obtained by contacting their local postmaster and it was sold as a collector's item. Choose the Elementary Schools for the coloring book contest Grades 3 — 5 in all four elementary schools were chosen to participate in the coloring book contest. The winner from each grade will have their picture published in the Indian River Sebastian 100 Magazine. The second and third place winners will receive a prize and every participant will receive a certificate and a centennial pin. The entry deadline is October 1, 2023. D. Historical - None E. Parades & Special Events Mr. Gingras said the organizers met and had great conversation. Everyone is excited and looking forward to incorporating the centennial into their advertising as well as in their festival. The city will have a 20 x 20 tent at each of the festivals. At each of the festivals the organizer would like have an exhibit of their own clubs history explaining how they started in Sebastian. F. Sponsorships a. Sponsorship update Ms. P. Williams said she sent out two mass emails. She has a zoom call scheduled with Cleveland Clinic Hospital who is interested in sponsoring the event. 3. NEXT MEETING The next meeting is scheduled for Monday July 10, 2023 at 10:00am. 4. December 8 Al I� 1914-1014 CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION City of Sebastian Coloring Contest Entry Requirements and Contest Rules The City of Sebastian is seeking elementary students, grades 3 - 5, that are interested in entering a coloring contest. The following guidelines will be considered by the judging panel when choosing the winning picture: 1. All pictures must be taken from the Sebastian Centennial Celebration Coloring Book. 2. Pictures must be colored with crayons, colored pencils, or both. 3. Entries will be judged on creativity, coloring skill, and overall artistic ability. 4. Only one entry per student may be submitted. 5. Complete an entry form for your submission (see page 10). Entries may be dropped off to Cathy Testa at City Hall: 1225 Main Street Sebastian, FL 32958 Entries may be mailed to: City of Sebastian Attn: Cathy Testa 1225 Main Street Sebastian, FL 32958 Use of Picture By entering this contest, the contestant warrants that the picture submitted is his or her original work. While contestants retain all rights to their picture, contestant must grant permission for unrestricted use of the picture to the City of Sebastian or its designee, to utilize the picture in future publications, educational exhibits, and on the internet to promote the functions and values of the City. Judging Decisions of the judges are final. Winners will be contacted as soon as the judges reach a decision. A winner from each grade will have their picture published in the Indian River Sebastian 100 Magazine and receive a publication of the magazine. The second and third place winners will receive a prize and have their picture placed on the city's centennial website and Facebook page. All participants will receive a certificate and a centennial pin. Deadline All contest entries must be received or postmarked by October 1, 2023. In 1983 the building was turned over to the City and would become City Hall until 2004 when a new City Hall was built next door. M PAUL KROKIL This statue at Riverview Park is of Paul Kroegel. His work in protecting the pelicans and nesting birds on Pelican Island was responsible for President Teddy Roosevelt establishing the First National Wildlife Refuge. Kroegel was named Warden of the refuge in 1903. 5 HOME OF THE FIRST NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE March 14, 1903, by executive order of President Theodore Roosevelt, Pelican Island Wildlife Refuge was the first official wildlife refuge in the United States. 'LLICAN ISIAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE 1903-zoo3 In recognition of the 100th year anniversary, the U.S. Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp to celebrate the centennial anniversary marking the beginning of the National Wildlife Refuge system. Local surfers have enjoyed riding waves along the town's coastline, and the community has fostered a small but dedicated surf culture. SAND AND SEA Some of my favorite things to do at the beach are: HONORING OUR VETERANS n Annually we honor our veterans with parades and services at Veterans Memorial Park. No matter what war or what part of the world they served in, Sebastian takes the time to make sure we honor them.
