.,.Airport director applications received
By. George Ricker
Although the position has not been
advertised, Sebastian City Manager
Robb McClary already has received
two letters of application for the
position of airport director.
Airport Manager John Van
Antwerp has applied for the $10,000
to $15,000-a-year job.
The second applicant is William E.
Strauss, 431 Ponoka St., who is a
retired inspector with the Federal
Aviation Administration.
McClary was instructed to hire an
airpvr-¢-director at, the City Council
meeting'last Week-.
The council adopted Vice Mayor
Robert McCarthy's motion by a 3-2
vote with Councilmen Robert
McCollum and Lloyd Rondeau
joining with McCarthy in support of
the . motion, and Mayor Richard
Votapka and Councilman Frank
Oberbeck voting against it.
Although the city's code of
ordinances .creates both the position
of airport manager and airport
director, the airport director's post has
never been filled nor is it funded in
this year's budget. The .airport
director will be paid out of the airport
enterprise fund.
McClary said Tuesday he intends to
carry out the wishes of the council and
hopes to advertise the position in
about one week.
He said the procedure followed to
hire an airport director will be the
same that he has followed in hiring
other city personnel.
McClary said the first step is to
develop a job description and salary
range. He said, in_ this case, the job
description is fairly well defined in the
city code. The 'salary range was.
established by the City Council.
The position of airport director is
established in Section 3.5-10 of the
code of ordinances.
According to the code,
"Prerequisites for the position would
include a strong background of
administration and finance in airport/
aircraft related fields, as well as a
sound understanding of local
government."
The code charges the airport
director with securing all revenue
funding, including grants from the
state
supervising airport activities;,
working on the development of
leases, contracts and concessions and
submitting an annual budget.
In the past, Van Antwerp, acting as
airport manager, has prepared
budgets, obtained a grant for the
airport master plan and generally
supervised activities at the airport. He
has been airport manager since 1973.
The next step will be to advertise
the position and accept applications.
McClary explained the letters from
Van Antwerp and Strauss will be kept
on file until the position has been;
advertised and other candidates have
had an opportunity,to apply.
Finally, McClary said, he will hire
the best qualified applicant for the
and federal government, job.
