Sebastian Bureau Chief
A final financial report for the
Citizens Airport Watch Political
Committee shows it received
$1,330 in contributions since Oct.
11 and paid $2,000 to its attorney,
but has not paid a state -imposed
fine for filing previous reports late.
Since the CAW Political Com-
mittee -has disbanded and closed its
bank account, the money to pay
the fine will have to come from
Citizens Airport' Watch of Sebas-
tian, Inc., said John Evans, the
group's attorney. The political
committee was formed as an
offshoot of.the CAW of Sebastian,
Inc.
Evans said .he has filed separate
appeals against the fine with .the
Divisions of Elections and through
the courts. He said he would also
send a letter to the City Clerk's
office correcting the latest finan-
cial statement, which carried for-
ward an incorrect balance for total
contributions-, ', ;
A second political committee, the
County Government . Political
Action Committee, reported re-
ceiving $660 in donations during
this reporting period, raising its
total contributions to $2,063. It
paid $660.47 to its attorney, for a
total of $2,063.87 in expenses.
Its major contributors were Burt
Snell,, $200; Jerald Strnad, $110;
Roger L.'Cooper, $100; Dennis Car-
mody, . $100; and Harold Adams,
$100..
Although there is no money left
in the CG Political Action Commit-
tee account, it is unclear if the
organization has disbanded. Nei-
ther of its officers could be reached
for comment.
. The bulk of the latest contribu-
tions to the CAW Political Action
Committee came from Laura Yates
Campbell,of West Tisbury, Mass.,
who gave $1,175, and the Citizens
Airport ,Watch of Sebast'an, Inc.,
which gave $661. Ruth Pasch, who
had loaned $400 to the committee,
forgave $100 of the debt and was
reimbursed $300, .
Cutler and Stanfield, the law
firm that prepared the airport ref-
erendum voted on in Sebastian's
March 1999 election, was paid
$2,000 in legal fees.
Even though the Cutler firm was
hired, by the CAW of Sebastian,
Inc., once the political action com-
mittee was formed it took over the
responsibility of paying the re-
mainder of Cutler's bills, said
CAW Vice President. Charles Sta-
chel. .
Attorney Evans said the political
action committee reported contrib-
utions in October because the state
still considered it in existence.
Otherwise, the $1,330 would have
gone directly to the CAW of Sebas-
tian, Inc.,, he said." '
The CAW Political.. Committee
was originally fined $7,700 for not
filing two ,financial reports on
time., The..: state Elections Com-
mission ruled that the group had to
file the reports, but reduced the
fine to $650
