Address Safety
At Sebastian Airport
The unfortunate accident near
Sebastian Municipal Airport Feb.
3 could have been prevented.
Had City Council adopted the
airport master plan four years ago
when it was approved, the airport
could have received grants and
installed a control tower.
Control towers monitor all air-
craft in the vicinity and prevent
two aircraft from being in the
same airspace at the same time.
Those people who have been
saying they want a "small, safe
airport" either are ignorant of safe
flying standards or are politically
motivated to ignore safety stan-
dards.
Neither the noise restrictions,
landing fees nor slurry sealing of
the runways add anything to the
safety of the airport. But this is
what we have been listening to for
the past few years.
The airport will always be small.
It is physically impossible to turn
the airport into a jetport, despite
the propaganda we were subjected
to last year.
It is time to start acting in.a re-
sponsible manner and address the
"safety". side of the airport contro-
versy and take the airport out of
politics.
