HomeMy WebLinkAbout02 16 1990 NTSB issues crash reportNTSB issues crash report :v Gggnn McLaren ;Sun staff reporter The National Transportation Safety Board released its preliminary report ' Wt Friday concerning the crash that occurred Feb. 3, involving two airplanes attempting to land at Sebastian Municipal Airport. Fault for the crash: has not been placed but the report details the. flights of _, oth planes, that of Jeffrey Alien Dimond, the 19-year-old FIT student pilot ,killed in the crash, and Roger Cooper, the Sebastian resident seriously injured ii the accident. ; According to the report, Cooper was flying an American Aviation plane on "tpersonal flight and had not filed a flight plan. He had taken off from Sebastian Municipal Airport 67 minutes before the collision, which occurred at 10.47 � w -v The report states thatDimond, who was flying'a Pipei aircraft registered,to Tlorida Institute of Technology, was on a training flight that had originated from Palm Beach International Airport 38 minutes before the crash. e The NTSB report also states that Dimond was on a,1.75-mile approach to the airport., The plane flown by Cooper flew behind the path of the FIT plane ;.,.an w d circledback toward runway 13, which both aircraft were apparently trying use. Cooper's plane struck the FIT plane in the right tail section approximately 300 feet from the ground, causing both planes to crash near the River's Edge subdivision on Roseland Road. '. Dimond was killed when his plane crashed nose first into the backyard of a 'River's Edge home. Cooper is still in serious condition in an Orlando hospital. NTSB investigator Corky Smith said the final report concerning the crash will not be made for up to six months.
