The right-of-way for the new U.S.1 high, ay was discussed and the Chair called on each Councilman for their respective views and after considerable time given to said discussion it was put to a roll call vote on the split highway the results being as follows, after motion by Councilman Taylor in favor of split highway which was seconded ~y Councilman Chesser and earrie Vote on split Highwa~ Councilman Oweatt Councilman Sembler Councilman Ellingsen Councilman Taylor Councilman Chesser Yes Yes Not voting Yes Yes. Mayor Shaffer reported on the Police Department but told the Council a more complete report would be give~ at the :'~ext regular meeting. The new typewriter was discussed and it was ~:.oved by Councilman Ellingsen which v. as seconded by Councilman "Paylor to purchase the Smith Corona typewriter.carried. Councilman Chesser told the Council the City needed more chairs for the City Hall' to accomodate more people.TLe Clerk was instructed to write for prices on folding chairs. Councilman Chesser askea what holidays were observed 'by the City for the City Employees,and after some discussion it was moved by Councilman ~hesser which was seconded by Councilman SemOler that the following holidays be observed,Christmas,New Years,Memorial Day, Fourth -of-July~orlndependence Day) Labor Day aI,d Thanksgiving Day. carried. Chesser Councilman 'told zhe Council that she thought the City had better make some provisions t sSoppeople from excavateing or selling sand off of properties in the City.It was agreed 'that the City Attorney would 0e consulted as ~o Ordi~:mnce governing same. Those present were ~Layor 2haffer,President Sewatt a~d Councilmen Ellingsen,Taylor and CSesser. Councilman Sembler absel~t. Minutes of the regular me~ting of Frb.22nd. and Special Meeting of ~,~arch 1st were approved as read. President Sweatt reported to Council on the meeting o~ the County Commissioners and explained the reason why the State Road ~epartment could not use the 80 feet for a four lane highway and from all indications the State Road Department would use a split highway thru Sebastian and would repair all storm sewers in order to protect the ~ew road. The Clerk was instructed to write letter to the County Commissioners reporting the Council views on the split Highly ~s entered in the minutes. after some discussion on a truck for the City,it was v:oved by Councilman Ellingsen and seco~ded by Councilman Chesser to authorize the ~fayor and Chief of Police to try and se-'~ cure prices on truck for the City. Councilman Taylor moved that the City buy twelve steel chairs number 646 from the Monroe Company of Colfax, Iowa 'at price of about $3.30 per chair,said chairs to shipped via freight.Said motion was seconded by Zouncilman Chesser. C~rrled. Bills amounting to $440.68 approved by the finance committee were authorized to Oe paid on motion by Councilman Ellingsen and seconded Dy Councilman Chesser.Carrle~. Mayor Shaffer was authorized by the Councilmto purchase paint for marking parking apaces on the streets on motion Oy Councilman Chesser and aeconded by Councilman Ellingsen. The ¥~yor was also authorized to purchase new tires for the Police car Just as as needed on motion by Councilman Ellingsen and seconded 'by Councilman Chesser..C~rried. The old typewriter was sold 'to Chief Adams for 10.00 on motion by Councilman Elllngsen and s corded by Councilman Chesser. carried. ( Continued over ) following resolution was presented by Councilman Ellin'~sen and moved its ado' Wt~EREAS: The Charles L.Futch Post 189 of the Departmen~ of Florida,American Legion,Ins., have offered to Purchase additional property from the City of Sebast. ian,Florida,adJoining their present property,for the purpose of building a new Legion Home,said property adjoining the present property of the American Legion and is not used for,or ~eld for for Municilpal purposes and is property which has been. ac~uired by the City for the non-payment of its liens thereon and is held for sale.Therefore, RESOLVED: That the city of Sebastian sell to the American Legion the following described property,to-wit: Begin at iron pipe which is the present NE corner of the American Le~ion property being in the SE 1/4 of the SW1/4 of Section 6,Township 31 South,and Range 39 East.Run North 153 feet thence West 300 feet ,-thence South 133 feet to the NW corner of the ~unerlcan Legion property,thence 300 feet to POB.Said resolution was seconded 0y Councilmmm Cbesser and carried. Meeting called by .~:ayor ]Laffer to discuss purchase of truck for the street Dep't. l~Ieeting called to order by Presider, t ~v..eatt Those present were ~'iayor Shaffer,President Sv,~tt and Councilmen Ellingsen,Taylor ~he sser. and~ ~Sembler. !:. ~ It was moved by Councilman Sembler and seconded by ~ouncilman Ellingsen that the City purchase the 1951 International Truck for the City,Carried. Councilman also m~vcd the radio be taken out of tho ~ruck and sold for not less than $20.00 , said mot ion ~:.'as seconded 'by Councilman .:~lling~e:~ u~d carried. Councilman Ellingsen moved that the Street Department to convert the truck for street department purpose,motion seconded by Councilman Chesser,and carried. Those present were ~.Iayor Shaffer,President Sweatt aud Councilmen Ellingsen,Taylor and Chesser. Councilman Sembler Absent.Attorney Walker present. Minutes of regular, meeting of March 8th,1954 and special meeting of ~.~arch 10,1954 were approved as read. Bill for ~he amoun~ of $ 59.00 for additional insurance on International Dump Truck which waB ajpro~ed by finance committee was authorized to be paid on motion by Councilman Ellingsen ahd seconded by Councilman Taylor.Carried. The Clerk was instructed to write a letter thanking the Indian River News for their tireless effort in obtaining tho new rates for telephones between Vero Beach Sebastian and ~elbourne and Sebastian which will go into effect Just as somn as the new eq. utpment can be installed. Councilman Sweatt reported to the Council what was needed to fix the lights in the City Park and it was moved by Councilman Taylor a:~d secon:.ed by Councilman £11ingsen that President Sweatt Wes to report what was needed and secure bids on same.Carried.
