PRESS JOURNAL, SEPTEMBER 16, 1983, TO CONSIDER THE ADOPTION OF TAX INCREASE, CITY
OF SEBASTIAN, FLORIDA, PROPOSED TO INCREASE ITS PROPERTY TAX LEVY BY (15%) PERCENT.
MAYOR FLOOD STATED THAT THE INCREASED MILLAGE RATE IS THE RESULT OF THE EXPANDED
HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION. HE EXPLAINED THAT WE LOST APPROXIMATELY $12 MILLION DOLLARS
IN TAXABLE PROPERTY VALUE THIS FISCAL YEAR WHICH WOULD HAVE GENERATED APPROXIMATELY
$58,000.00 IN AD VALOREM REVENUE BECAUSE OF THE HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION. HE ALSO
MENTIONED THAT IF THE CITY DID RECEIVE THE ADDITIONAL MONEY WE COULD HAVE KEPT THE
MILLAGE RATE AT A THREE TO FOUR PERCENT INCREASE. THE NEW MILLAGE RATE REFLECTS A
15 PERCENT INCREASE OVER LAST YEAR'S ROLL BACK RATE AND THAT RATE IS THE MILLAGE
NEEDED TO GENERATE THE SAME AMOUNT OF REVENUE AS THE PREVIOUS FISCAL YEAR.
