A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE INJECTION
OF WASTE WATER INTO THE AQUIFER OF THE
STATE OF FLORIDA.
WHEREAS, The interpretation and application of
wastewater treatment and disposal regulations by the
Florida Department of Environmental Regulation in some
areas of the state is resulting in plans and programs
for the disposal of treated effluent by direct injection
into our drinking water aquifer; and
WHEREAS, In many areas of Florida, there is an
abundance of waters suitable for drinking stored in our
natural underground reservoirs which are being adequately
recharged to meet present and future requirements for
such use; and
WHEREAS, Present technology cannot produce treated
wastewater effluent to the quality and reliability that will
not degrade these drinking water resources; and
WHEREAS, When the underground acquifer becomes
polluted, it cannot be restored to its original condition; and
WHEREAS, Other disposal methods are available which
are cost effective and do hot pose a possible hazard to the
health, safety and welfare to drinking water consumers and
which does not degrade our water resources.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SEBASTIAN, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
That the lack of need to recharge our aquifer by
direct injection of treated wastewater effluent, the
degradation of this quality and vital resource; the possible
adverse health effects, and the excessive costs of such
treatment and disposal measures, the City Council does
OPPOSE those programs for direct injection of
treated wastewater effluent into our drinking water aquifers
as being not in the best interest of the health, safety,
welfare and economy of the citizens of this City and this
State, and urges the Florida Department of Environmental
Regulation to reconsider any position which may result
in direct injection of treated wastewater effluent into
drinking water aquifers.
This Resolution was duly passed and adopted by
the Council of the City of Sebastian, Florida, this
Mayor
