HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-83-19RESOLUTION NO._~3-]~ A RESOLUTION URGING THE COUNTY COMMISSION TO ADOPT A FOUR CENTS PER GALLON GASOLINE TAX AS PROVIDED BY CHAPTER 83-3, LAWS OF FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Florida has authorized the counties in the state to levy up to a four cents tax on each gallon of gasoline sold in that county; and WHEREAS, the Legislature has directed that said funds collected from the imposition of said gasoline tax be used for the construction and maintenance of county and municipal roads and streets; and WHEREAS, the Legislature has further directed the counties who desire to levy such optional gasoline tax to negotiate a formula for distribution of said funds with the municipalities within the county; and WHEREAS, the City of Sebastian has analyzed its road construction and road maintenance capital expenditure needs for the next five years; and WHEREAS, the City of Sebastian has determined that a substantial sum of money will be necessary in order to properly maintain the existing roads and construct the necessary roads to meet the needs of the community; and WHEREAS, the four cents gasoline tax would provide an expanding source of revenue to meet these needs; and WHEREAS, the imposition of a gasoline tax would assist local taxpayers by charging of the actual users of said streets and roads, including drivers from out of state, for the maintenance and use of said roads; and WHEREAS, the adoption of said gasoline tax is in the best interests of the citizens of the City and the entire county. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEBASTIAN, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: That the Board of Commissioners of Indian River County, Florida, are strongly urged to adopt a four cents per gallon gasoline tax as provided by the State Legislature, which tax would automatically expire after a period of five (5) years; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the funds collected from said gasoline tax be distributed between the county and the various municipalities in the County in accordance with the formula as approved by the Indian River County Transportation Committee on June 7, 1983. THIS RESOLUTION was duly passed and adopted by the Council of the City of Sebastian, Florida, this ~dayor ATTEST: City Clerk
