A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CiTY OF
SEBASTIAN, FLORIDA, STATING THE POSiTiON OF THE COUNCIL
iN REGARD TO THE NORTH INDIAN RIVER COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL.
WHEREAS, on February 19, 1985, an Indian River County
School District bond referendum was approved by the electorate
wherein funds were allocated for the purchase of a North County
high school site; and
WHEREAS, the former Chairman of the Indian River County
School Board, Mrs. Dorothy Talbert, presented to and sought the
approval from the Sebastian City Council in on July 16, 1986, the
proposed North County high school site north and east of the
Sebastian River Middle Junior High School; and
WHEREAS, the Sebastian City Council endorsed the proposed
site as proposed at the July 16, 1986 meeting; and
WHEREAS, the former Indian River County School Board prior
to the November, 1986 general election, placed its emphasis and
main priority on constructing a new, second high school in north
Indian River County; and
WHEREAS, at present, sixteen portable classrooms exist at
the Veto Beach High School, the only high school in Indian River
County, and the approximate student population is 2,200 in a high
school designed for 1,650 students; and
WHEREAS, on May 24, 1988, the electorate of Indian River
County voted overwhelmingly to reject a 41.9 million dollar
Indian River County School District building bond referendum
wherein the construction of the North County high school was
ranked at the lowest priority.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SEBASTIAN, FLORIDA, that we do publicly declare to the
School Board of Indian River County, that in the best interests
of all students attending the Vero Beach High School, the School
Board should address the construction of a new North County High
School as the NUMBER ONE building priority to relieve present
overcrowded conditions at the existing high school; should
purchase the 85 acre site at the southeast corner of County Roads
510 and 512 without delay; and should submit a new building bond
referendum to the voters of Indian River County at the earliest
possible general election in which construction of the North
County High School is the highest priority. Also, as
representatives of the major segment of the North County
residents, we earnestly want the students of both the North
County and Veto Beach High Schools to receive equal school
curricula, regardless of school population, in order to provide
for equitable opportunities and quality of education for all,
regardless of where they reside.
This Resolution shall be effective upon final passage by the
City Council.
