A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SEBASTIAN, INDIAN RIVER
COUNTY, FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE LOCAL
OPTION ONE-CENT SALES TAX AUTHORIZED PURSUANT TO
CHAPTER 212.055, FLORIDA STATUTES (SUPP. 1988);
PROVIDING FOR REPEAL OF RESOLUTIONS OR PARTS OF
RESOLUTIONS IN CONFLICT HEREWITH; PROVIDING FOR AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, local governments in Florida, and in Indian River
County in particular, have been mandated by the State of Florida
to provide ever increasing types and levels of service to the
residents of our community; and
WHEREAS, the cost of these services must be borne by the
local governments, which in most cases means additional property
tax burden; and
WHEREAS, to remedy this situation the Florida Legislature
has recently enacted a local option sales tax, which would allow
local governments to, by ordinance, adopt a one-cent local option
sales tax, if approved by referendum of voters, which revenue can
be used for capital expenditures only; and
WHEREAS, Indian River County is presently drafting an
ordinance calling for a referendum to approve such a one-cent
local option sales tax for fifteen (15) years; and
WHEREAS, the City of Sebastian will receive a portion of the
sales tax revenue, pursuant to SS 218.62, Florida Statutes, which
City share for the first year of the tax is estimated at
$504,600; and
WHEREAS, the receipt of this local option sales tax revenue
will reduce the need to increase property taxes in our community,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SEBASTIAN, iNDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
SECTION 1. ENDORSEMENT. The City endorses the effort of
the Board of County Commissioners of Indian River County to adopt
a local option one-cent sales tax and recommends to the voters of
the City that they support the tax referendum.
SECTION 2. CONFLICT. All resolutions or parts of
resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby repealed.

SECTION 3. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Resolution shall take
effect immediately upon final passage.
