R-97-80 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SEBASTIAN, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, APPROVING THE TREE ADVISORY BOARDS RECOMMENDED NATIVE TREE LIST; PROVIDING FOR REPEAL OF RESOLUTIONS OR PARTS OF RESOLUTIONS; CONFLICTS; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, The Tree Advisory Board has recommended that the City Council adopt a Recommended Native Trees list; and WHEREAS, Said list is an abbreviated version of the list of trees already approved by the City Council and is not an exclusive list of native trees that can be used in the City of Sebastian; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEBASTIAN, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLOIRDA, as follows: SECTION 1. APPROVAL OF TREE ADVISORY BOARD'S RECOMMENDED NATIVE TREE LIST: The City Council of the City of Sebastian, hereby approves the Tree Advisory Board Recommended Native Tree list. Said list is only a recommendation and is not the exclusive list of native trees that can be grown in the City of Sebastian. SECTION 2. CONFLICTS: All Resolutions or parts thereof in conflict herewith are, to the extent of such conflict, superseded and repealed. SECTION 3. EFFECTIVE DATE: immediately upon its adoption. Wai~er Bar~es, Mayor ApProved as to Form and Content: Valerie Settles City Attorney Tree Advisory Board'S Recommended Native Trees: LARGE TREES · Bald Cypress -Taxodium distichium: deciduous needle-like leaves turn coppery...r_e.d in fall 25-35 foot canopy spread and height of 60-80 feet -- wetlands native which adapts to dry locations. · Cabbage Palm -Sabal l~almetto: our Florida state tree; ~roup to~ether for shade canopy 10-15 foot canopy from palmate fronds and height of 40-50 feet-- resist pruning more than 180°. · Live Oak -O~uercus virginiana: long-lived stately oak with thick, horizontal branches 60-100 foot canopy spread and height of 40-60 feet -- deeply furrowed bark and up to 6' trunk. · Laurel Oak -O, uercus lauri, fotia: short-lived (40-60 years) oak which prefers moist soil 40-60 foot canopy spread and height of 60 feet or more -- nearly smooth bark and up to 3' trunk. · Red Maple -Acer rubrum: oval-shaped canopy; deciduous leaves redden for early fall color 25-35 foot canopy spread and height of 60 feet or more -- prefers moist site and tolerates flooding. · Slash Pine -Pinus elliottii var. densa: long-needled conifer which self-prunes lower branches 35-50 foot canopy spread and height of 75-100 feet -- likes acidic soil and dislikes high pH irrigation water. · Southern Magnolia -Mag..nolia grand!flora: larKe, evergreen tree with hu~e, fragrant flowers 30-40 foot canopy spread and height of 60-75 feet -- prefers acidic soils; smaller growing cultivars available. · Southern Red Cedar -[uniperus silicicola: fine-textured~ pyramidal evergreen; privacy screen 20-30 foot spread and height of 25-35 feet -- aromatic foliage with small, dark blue fruits; fast growing. SMALL TREES -- LARGE SHRUBS · Dahoon Holly -[lex cassine: evergreen Florida holly; brilliant red berries on female plants 8-12 foot spread and height of 20-30 feet -- prefers moist soils, but tolerates moderately dry locations. · Simpson's Stopper.~Myrcianthes fragrans: aromatic~ evergreen leaves; small~ fragrant flowers 8-12 foot spread and height of 25-35 feet -- distinctive reddish, flaking bark and abundant red fruit. · Wax Myrtle -M_~lrica cerifera:~......aromatic~ evergreen leaves; gray-blue berries on female plants 20-25 foot spread and height of 15-25 feet -- dislikes constant pruning or removal of rejuvenating suckers. · Yaupon Holly. ~[lex vomitoria: small-leafed Florida holly; brilliant red berries on female plants 15-20 foot spread and height of 15-25 feet -- established plants are drought tolerant in acidic or alkaline soils. * Saw Palmetto -Serenoa repens: low~ reclining native palm with large fruits for wildlife--flowers greenish white in spikelike clusters-- stalks armed with sharp spines--fruit oblong drupe.
