Indian River County (IRC) Commission meeting as scheduled for Tuesday August 24, 1999 (as Mayor Wininger discussed, each of you should drive individually to IRC Commission Chambers, in time for the meeting to begin at 9:00 a.m.). Arrangements have been made to have officials from the City of Sebastian speak, in effort to solicit a $200,000 contribution towards the purchase of the Good Guys, Inc. property. Previously, this arrangement was planned for the Tuesday August 17, 1999 meeting. However, our key supporter of this initiative, Commissioner Fran Adams will be out of town until then. In addition, the postponed presentation allows me time to meet with both Commissioner Adams and County Administrator Jim Chandler sometime next week, so as to identify specific accounts from which this contribution can be made. As such, I hope to have all bases covered prior to the August 24th presentation. WFIT Interview with Terrence Moore Do not be alarmed if you were to hear a familiar voice on you FM radio in the near future. I was recent asked to be a guest on a local radio talk show program, "Eye on the Coast", sponsored by WFIT, Florida Institute of Technology's public radio station in Melbourne, Florida. The basis of this discussion will be to help better educate the public about the Council/Manager form of local government, as well as to possibly talk about positive inroads we hope to make in the City of Sebastian in the near future. I will be meeting with the program's host, Ed Maurer at the radio station Wednesday afternoon, August 18% Wish me luck! City Council Information Letter August 13, 1999 Page 2 Periodic Presentations~ Falcon Cable Media A few days ago, I met with Falcon Cable Media Regional Manager Ken Vickers in effort to become better acquainted with his company's product delivery. He was very helpful in explaining Sebastian's cable infrastructure, as well as providing an understanding about the company's current sales transaction process and improvements to be made to the overall service in this community. I asked him if he and/or other representatives of Falcon Cable could work to provide updates to City of Sebastian officials and citizens in public forums (i.e. City Council meetings). He obliged, whereby we hope to begin this arrangement within the ne.x! month or so. Millennium Communities Pro.qram Earlier this year, the United States Government, in cooperation with the National League of Cities launched the Millennium Communities Program, for purposes of recognizing cities that will host celebrations honoring the new millennium. Such a designation makes sense for the City of Sebastian, in that next year marks the community's 75th anniversary as a municipality (which happens to fall at the dawn of the next millennium). I have application materials here in the office. To qualify for acceptance into this program, arrangements would need to be made to designate a working committee, charged with the responsibility of designing and initiating programs and projects to honor the celebration (for instance, we can call it the Sebastian 75th Anniversary Committee). Benefits associated with Millennium Communities Program participation include eligibility for various grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, as well as the potential for having our community recognized nationally (to help "put Sebastian on the map", so to speak...). I will work to bring forth recommendations to the City Council in the near future as to how this initiative can be successful. Meanwhile, I would be very much interested in listening to ideas any of you may have regarding such an effort. Once A.qain - Job Well Done! Just thought all of you should know that during the last two days, many individuals contacted this office to express their support of the property tax reduction/utility tax cap removal. Although a minority disagrees with this action, the overwhelming positive response indicates that people are intelligent enough to know that the right thing was done, for the benefit of the entire community. As a City Council, you deserve all of the accolades.
