HomeMy WebLinkAbout03012004HOME OF PELICAN ISLAND TREE AND LANDSCAPE ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES REGULAR MEETING MONDAY, MARCH 1, 2004- 5:30 P.M. Chairman Fulton celled the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. ROLL CALL Members Present: Chairman Cathy Fulton Vice Chairman Charles Cardinale Henry Madsen Anne Dann Lynn Albury (arrived at 5:40pm) Mary Bennett Marsha Fusco Staff members present: Chris McCarthy, Parks & Rec. Dept. Barbara Brooks, MIS Dept. APPROVAL OF FEBRUARY 2. 2004 MINUTES MOTION Cardinale/Madsen VOICE VOTE on the motion carried 4.0 '1 make a motion to approve the February 2, 2004 minutes." ANNOUNCEMENTS: There were no announcements. OLD BUSINESS: A. Arbor Day 2004 Phyllis Huseman (388-5770) from the Pelican Island Garden Club said the Garden Club would provide cold drinks & cookies for the celebration. They would need only one (t) table for their use. Chris McCarthy will have a generator there. Charles Cardinale stated that the letters to the Elementary schools have been sent out along with the Release Form for the Essay Contest. He is playing Page 2 March 1, 2004 phone tag with Liberty Magnet & Pelican Elementary. Spring Break for the schools runs March 29~ thru April 2"~' so the deadline for the Essay Contest will have to be moved up to March 26t~. Copies of the Release Fon'n will go out when a final count is determined. KIRB will be involved with donations but we're not sure by how much. It was decided that gift certificates from Walden Books would be good prizes. $20 for 1st place, $15 for 2r~ place & $10 for 3r~ place. Cathy Fulton will handle. Chris McCarthy will let the board know at the 3/23104 meeting about the saplings, which are to be given out at the celebration. Christine Kelly, Director of Extensions agreed to be a speaker at the event. Rev. Gary Isner from Roseland United Methodist Church will give the Invocation. Mary Bennett will check with the Boy Scouts for the Presentation of Colom. Chris McCarthy will plant four (4) trees at the event. Selections were: Tabebuia, American Elm, Winged Elm, Long Leaf Pine & Live Oak. He will try to get us one (1) of each if possible. The Invitation list was to be gone over and updated by the 3/23/04 meeting. Cathy Fulton witl handle the Press Release and get it to the P.J. Mamha will contact Ranger Ron Hicks to see if he would like to be a speaker at the event. Champion Trees There was no discussion due to time constraints of present meeting. Update on Butterfly Garden - Lynn Albury There was no discussion due to time constraints of present meeting. NEW BUSINESS: PSA's from the National Arbor Day Foundation - Postponed until the next meeting due to time constraints of present meeting. Shade House at Sebastian High School - Not discussed due to time constraints of present meeting. MEMBER MATTERS: No member matters. OPENED THE FLOOR TO CITIZEN CONCERNS: Citizen, Mary Ann Krueger, 121 Miller Ddve, Sebastian, FL, addressed the board with a list of wdtten questions that she would like answered. The list was to be copied and mailed to all board members. Ms. Krueger is very concerned with all the trees being destroyed in the city and would like a cash value put on the trees. Citizen, Andrea Coy, 333 Pineapple Street, Sebastian, FL, is concemed that we need to do more to protect the trees in the City. There was much discussion. STAFF MATTERS: F P & L would like to come speak to the board regarding their campaign "Right Tree Right Place". It was decided that the meeting in May would be the best time.
