6. OLD BUSINESS:
Field Trip to 838 Wentworth Street on Saturday. December 10th at 11:00am. Members
measured the tree at Mr. Lagin's house and determined the pine to be the Champion at
this time. Anne Dann turned in the minutes from the meeting.
Update on Champion Tree Clinic. Having the Garden Club there was great. The board
felt the speakers were good and that the press coverage was wonderful. The Sebastian
Sun will be doing an article on the event. The turnout was low but everyone felt it was
because of the weather. All in all, the event was a success. Neil Lagin thanked the
Board for all there help.

Arbor Dav - Councilmember Andrea Coy agreed to be a speaker at the event. The
school board needs a copy of the flyer/contest rules for their records. It is just a
formality. Mary Bennett will fax a copy to Lynn Albury. Mary Bennett noted that she
contacted the Sebastian River Art Club and they might donate money for prizes for the
contest. A theme needs to be chosen for Arbor Day. ''Trees are in our future" or
something like this was suggested. Kathryn Silva of Sebastian suggested "Plant in Code
- Be in Mode" for the theme. Dr. Thomas will do the invocation again. The Garden Club
will do the refreshments. We will need a generator. It was decided that the event be set
up on the east side of the park (on the Easy St. side). The Gobi Fest is also on April 8th.
Lynn Albury will contact SRHS ROTC to see if they can do the Presentation of Colors. If
not the VFW could do it. Mary Bennett had spoken to a couple of nurseries and they
showed interest in having informational type tables at the event. They would not be
allowed to sell items this year. They will be asked to donate door prizes and possible
one tree to plant at Easy Street Park. If they are going to donate a tree they need to get
it to the City a week before the event. Therese Miller will contact some places for door
prizes. Neil is going to contact a couple of the banks. Lynn will contact Macho about
money. Lynn will get a donation request letter to the Board secretary to put on City
letterhead. Neil will handle the press and distributing flyers. Champion Tree plaques will
be presented during the Arbor Day celebration.
Neil Lagin informed the members that Leola Varick of 519 Periwinkle Drive would like
the Board to come to her house to measure an oak tree on Saturday, January 14th at
10:00am. The Board Secretary will post the field trip. Someone will have to take
minutes.
2006 Work Plan - The work plan looked good except Commercial Landscape code
needs to be added to list.
7.
NEW BUSINESS:
Tape 1, side 2
Trish Adams, Temporary Environmental Advisory Board Chairperson, spoke at the
meeting. She would like to have a joint meeting with her board and the Tree Board.
The meeting was set up for 6:30pm on Monday, February 6th. The Tree Board will
conduct our regular meeting at 5:30pm then have the joint meeting right after.
Ms. Adams also made some suggestions for prizes for Arbor Day.
8. MEMBER MATTERS:
Neil Lagin mentioned the open alternate position on the Tree Board.
Anne Dann mentioned wanting to re-establish the City as a "Tree City". Mr. McCarthy
stated that getting the grant and planting all the new trees as well as having the Arbor
Day and Champion Tree celebrations would be good on the application. There still was
the money issue of $2.00 per capita that the City would have to pay.
9. STAFF MATTERS:
Chris McCarthy noted that the grant for the replacement trees from hurricane damage
was going well and with the Councils approval the trees should be in by March.
