7. OLD BUSINESS:
A. Champion Tree Dav Update: Ms. Cummings updated the board on Champion
Tree Day. The refreshments are covered, there are donations for door prizes, Dr. Baker
is all set. It was decide that the board would need six tables and 40 chairs for the event.
The board secretary will let Chris McCarthy know. Everything has been handled.
8. NEW BUSINESS:
Ms. Schuster read a letter from Ms. Sandra Benham, a First grade school teacher at
Liberty Magnet school. She is looking for some judges for their Science fair on
December 13th. Board members Schuster, Yanchis, Miller and Koerner offered their
assistance. A packet will be given to each of the judges to explain what they would be
required to do.
9. MEMBER MATTERS:
Ms. Yanchis brought up the problem of sprinklers running while it's raining or after a
heavy rain on City property. If anyone sees something like this going on they can give
Ms. Reynolds a call and she will contact Public Works. Ms. Yanchis said she will work
on getting slides or a short video for Channel 25. The video clips should be around 15
seconds in length. Ms. Reynolds will request approval from the City Manager to air these
slides during the break of Council meetings.
The board welcomed Ms. Anne Dann and Mr. Charles Cardinale and thanked them for
coming to show the board how to measure trees with a tree stick. Mr. Cardinale
explained how to measure a tree properly. The board members then went outside into
the court yard and practiced how to walk off steps, measure the tree height, crown width
and trunk diameter of a tree. The board asked Ms. Dann and Mr. Cardinale if they could
attend Champion Tree day and hold a demonstration there. They said they were
available.
Mr. Slattery said that he read that they were building a five story hotel out at CR512 and
Hwy 95 in Fellsmere. He also heard that there was talk about the County building a five
story hotel on US 1 next to the hospital. Sebastian and Vero Beach have height limits of
three stories and he feels something should be done to keep Fellsmere and the County
to the same. Ms. Reynolds recommended that Mr. Slattery email the County
Commissioners. The City does have some say so by being members of the MPO
(Metropolitan Planning Organization).
10. STAFF MATTERS:
The board secretary was requested by the City Clerk to ask the members to choose a
liaison for Earth Day. Ms. Schuster volunteered. She will report back from the meetings
with the Vero Beach Earth Day group. The first meeting won't be until January or
February.
