The Gopher Tortoise listed as a threatened species from Florida Fish & Wildlife Service occupies this area. To properly restore suitable habitat for the Gopher Tortoise and its commensals (animals that may share the burrow with the Tortoises), a habitat restoration project was born. Starting at 7:30 am, Saturday, volunteers Mr. Koerner, and Mr. Schuster, members of the board, Cynthia Schuster, Lynn Albury, Ginny Koerner, and Jim Slaterey, City workers Bill Bepler & Chris Hiler from Parks, Terry Reno and Rick Guarino from Stormwater, Gary Allen from Roads, Donna Cyr, from City Clerk, and Margie Reynolds, from Growth Management participated in this restoration project. We cleared out invasive brazillian pepper, invasive vines and shrubs, trimmed trees, and opened up this habitat. Gopher Tortoises need a combination of shade/sun, and ample food supply to remain here. We were all thinking how happy the trees became once we removed some of those dreaded vines off of them. We fmished at approximately 11 am, and were amazed at how quickly we completed this. A bat house, ` -c ____= ___._-- built & donated by Jim Slaterey was mounted on a snag.
