Joseph Wilbur O'Donnell
JOSEPH WILBUR O'DONNELL O'Donnell, Wilbur Joseph, "Bill 91, of 366 Joy
Haven Drive, Sebastian, Florida, formerly of East Meadow, L.I., New York,
departed from this world on 14 Sept 2009. Born in Manhattan, New York in 1918,
he graduated from Hempstead High School in 1936 and was a draftsman for a
diesel engine company before becoming a paratrooper in the elite 11th Airborne
Division in 1943. He saw action in Luzon, New Guinea, and the Philippines and
was awarded the American Service, A &P Service, Bronze Star w/Bronze Service
Arrowhead, Philippines Liberation, Good Conduct, Solider and Silver Star Medals
and the Purple Heart for wounds received during the Battle of Leyte in 1945.
Upon his discharge he joined the New York Fire Department and obtained the
rank of Lieutenant before his retirement in 1961. He was subsequently honored
at Yankee Stadium in 1969 as a Hero of New York for his actions as a member
of the NYFD. During his career with the NYFD, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts
degree from Queens College, New York. Upon his retirement from the NYFD, he
started a career as a Teach er at Calhoun High School in Merrick, L.I., New York
in 1962. During his illustrious career at Calhoun, he was awarded dual Master of
Science Degrees in Education by Queens College before retiring in 1981. Bill
moved to Sebastian in 1991 and was a member of the Sebastian Planning and
Zoning Commission. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Knights of
Columbus, Charter Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2736, the
Disabled American Veterans, the Florida Sheriffs Association and was
Commissioner of the East Meadow Little League and a Commander of the US
Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 13-9. Beloved father of Michael (Thousand Oaks,
CA) Dennis (Amityville,NY), and Timothy (Chicago, IL) O'Donnell; daughter in-
laws, Patrice and Cynthia O'Donnell; son -in -law, Steve Hancox; grandfather of
Michael, Erin and Brian O'Donnell and Joshua Hancox,. He was preceded in
death by his wife, Virginia, his daughter, Patricia (Hancox),and son, Brian.
Visitation will be held from 12 -2 p.m., September 18, 2009 at the Strunk Funeral
Home, Sebastian, FL, with a funeral service at 2 p.m., in the funeral home
chapel. Interment will follow at Sebastian Cemetery with full military honors
conducted by the Sebastian Area Veterans' "Honor Guard
