Staff Present: Rebecca Grohall, Board Liaison and Donna Cyr, Recording Secretary
4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: April 4, 2011 meeting
MOTION by Ms. Schnee and SECOND by Mr. Alvarez to approve the April 4, 2011
minutes as written, passed with unanimous voice vote.
Ms. Cyr, board secretary, reminded the board that any emails they receive or send in the
capacity of the board is public record. They need to forward or copy any emails to the
board secretary.
Mr. Spokas let the board know that there will be a lecture at the County Library.
Sponsored by Pelican Island Audubon, Dr. Grant Gilmore, renowned authority on fish
physiology biology at Florida Tech, will give a talk on May 9 at 6pm 8pm. The talk is
titled "Critical Fish Habitat in the IR Lagoon
A. Earth Day 2011, Saturday, April 23rd 9am 3pm Tim Glover, Friends of St.
Sebastian River emailed a letter of suggestions for next year (see attached). Ms.
Graves referred to the letter stating most of the suggestions had been tried and were
being implemented or just didn't work for our group. She stated that most of the vendors
that he suggested were contacted and couldn't make the event and the ones that weren't
contacted will be next year. Ms. Graves suggested not doing door prizes or changing
how door prizes are distributed. Also keep the prizes theme oriented such as trees,
plants or bird houses, etc. She also suggested shortening the event to 1:OOpm instead
of 3:OOpm; only doing the photo contest (which went well); using the DJ only and not
worry about getting a band. It worked out great with having Earth Day on the same day
as the Easter Egg Hunt. It brought over families from the hunt.

Mr. Spokas mentioned having Harbour Branch at the event was great. The gentleman
at their booth was very informative. Ms. Graves said she would be sending out Thank
You emails and notes to all vendors that contributed door prizes as well to all vendors
that participated.
Ms. Schnee said trying to get people to stop by our booth to sign in just didn't work so
we could probably eliminate that. Ms. Schnee gave her list of vendors that attended to
the board secretary to be copied for each board member. Members discussed if Fish
Wildlife were at the event and they weren't. Ms. Graves will update the vendor list and
keep it for next year to work off of. Ms. Schnee will put together a list of names of
organizations that showed interest in participating but couldn't make the event.
The board is participating in the Island Cleanup with Friends of St. Sebastian River on
Saturday, May 7th. Mr. Alvarez will confirm that we still have the pontoon boat. Bruce
Zingman, Friends of the Sebastian River, mentioned that there wasn't anyone to pick up
trash from the event. Ms. Graves said if necessary she will haul the trash in her truck.
Mr. Zingman will take care of providing the supplies (gloves and bags, etc.) Ms. Schnee
will contact Mr. Zingman regarding that 10 people from our board will be attending.
B. Champion Tree Program All the residents have been contacted for permission to
go on their property. The field trip for the measuring will be done on Tues., May 10th
and May 17th. Everyone will arrive at City Hall at around 5:15pm leaving at 5:30pm.
Three trees will be measure on each day. After the calculations are made and if any
Champion trees are acknowledged they will have their certificates awarded at a Council
meeting. Ms. Schnee asked that only Native Florida trees should be eligible to be a
Champion. Ms. Grohall said that the resolution for the program states that any Native
and naturalized tree is acceptable, as long as they are non evasive or exotic. If we were
to only do native trees the tree pool would be very small. The new area State Forester,
Richie Bamlet, suggested changing from the Champion Tree program to the Heritage
Tree program. Ms. Grohall will set up a time for him to come in and give a presentation
to the board. If the board wanted to change the program it would have to go before
Council.
8. NEW BUSINESS:
No new business.
9. MEMBER MATTERS:

out. She also wanted to give a special thank you to Mr. Spokas's wife who is a nurse
and assisted with a small child that was hurt.
11. Being no further business, Ms. Graves adjourned the meeting at 6:33 p.m.
