TWO OR MORE ELECTED OFFICIALS MAYBE IN ATTENDANCE. m.. SEBAa HOME OF PELICAN ISLAND NATURAL RESOURCES BOARD MINUTES TUESDAY, JUNE 7, 2011 - 6:00 P.M. City Council Chamber, 1225 Main Street, Sebastian Chairperson Graves called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. 2. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. 3. ROLL CALL: Present: Robin Graves - Chair Albert Alvarez Jane Schnee Eric Spokas — Vice Chair Tara Howe Staff Present: Ginny Sieferd, Board Liaison and Donna Cyr, Recording Secretary APPROVAL OF MINUTES: May 2, 2011 regular meeting and May 10, 2011 field trip MOTION by Mr. Spokas and SECOND by Ms. Howe to approve the May 2nd, 2011 minutes as written, motion carried. MOTION by Mr. Alvarez and SECOND by Ms. Graves to approve the May 10th, 2011 minutes as written, motion carried. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Ginny Sieferd, Board Liaison was introduced to the board. NOMINATIONS FOR CHAIRPERSON Jane Schnee nominated Robin Graves as Chairperson, SECOND by Mr. Spokes. Being no other nominations, Ms. Graves is appointed Chairperson. NOMINATIONS FOR VICE CHAIRPERSON Robin Graves nominated Eric Spokas as Vice Chairperson, SECOND by Mr. Alvarez. Being no other nominations, Mr. Spokas is appointed Vice Chairperson. 6. PUBLIC INPUT: No public input. OLD BUSINESS: Reschedule Champion Tree Measuring. It was decided to have the field trip on Thursday June 23rd. The group will meet at City Hall at 5:30pm then head out to the Natural Resources Board Meeting June 7, 2011 Page Two first home. All members said they can make it. Ms. Cyr will contact the tree owners and let them know of the new date. Ms. Schnee suggested thank you notes to KIRB and Dunkin Donuts for the donations for the May 7th Island cleanup. Chairperson Graves will take care of this task. 8. NEW BUSINESS: Ms. Schnee talked about joining the Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup on Saturday, July 23rd for our island cleanup. Jane will coordinate with April Price. Members need to work on getting a boat. Mr. Alvarez and Ms. Graves will contact friends of theirs that have boats. 9. MEMBER MATTERS: Ms. Graves talked to the board about the need to recruit new members so the board doesn't fold. It would also help to bring in new ideas. She suggested talking to friends and other people are who are environmentally involved. Ms. Schnee suggested talking to other related organizations. Mr. Spokas talked to the board about the lecture at the North County Library by Dr. Gilmore. Dr. Gilmore spoke on the "Critical Fish Habitat ". Mr. Spokas and Ms. Schnee attended as private citizens and said the lecture was well attended and very well done. It was a free lecture. 10. STAFF MATTERS: Ms. Sieferd let the board know that she sent in the paperwork to renew the adoption of Spoil Island IR1. She passed out a copy of the application to each board member. (see attached) She answered Mr. Alvarez s question that this is a yearly renewal. Ms. Cyr brought up that the board wasn't required to meet every month and being it was a slow period that maybe the board could take the summer off to regroup. The board decided to skip the July meeting and tentatively skip the August meeting. The board was asked to brainstorm new ideas /projects for the board to get involved with. They were also asked to get the word out and try to recruit new board members. Ms. Cyr will keep in touch with the members regarding the usual State sponsored Island cleanup held in September. 11. Being no further business, Ms. Graves adjourned the meeting at 6:28 p.m. Natural Resources Chairperson Signature Date Minutes from the June 23rd 2011 Champion tree measuring. Robin Graves, Albert Alverz and Eric Spokas left from the City Hal] Parking lot at 5:25 pm to measure three trees located at 1013 Indian River Dr., 612 Balboa St and 1840 Barber St. We finished up at 6:45. Field Trip — Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup Project Saturday, July 23, 2011 Met at the Main Street Boat Ramp around 8:OOam Noted Volunteers: Robin Graves, Board member Jane Schnee, Board member Eric Spokas, Board member Albert Alvarez, Board member Ann Lucier, Board member Hank Kriss , Board member Captain Gilbert Gordian Jr., Board member Stephen Lucier, citizen volunteer Cheyenne Gerber, citizen volunteer Albert Alvarez, citizen volunteer Meghan Alvarez, citizen volunteer Ernest "Bucky" Gerber, City Staff Ginny Sieferd, City Staff Donna Cyr, City Staff Other volunteers — names unknown Lori Terry- Bender asked for an excused absence On July, 23rd, 2011, the Natural Resources Board of Sebastian met at the Main Street boat ramp around 8:OOam. At that time the board and volunteers departed on boats to Spoil Island IR1, Island IR9 and the other islands located in the Indian River Lagoon, to conduct a clean up. The group going to IR1 arrived around 8:30am at the island. The boat for the board was provided by Captain Gilbert Gordian Jr. We had a crew of 8 volunteers in attendance on IR1 to total 20 hours labor. The group succeeded in removing 10 trash bags (x's 30 Ibs), plus 2 pallets, 1 door, 1 table, 1 rolling desk chair, a number of folding chairs, assorted pieces of metal, ice cooler, and random junk. There were also bottles and cans for recycling. Other board members went to other islands and provided assistance with cleanup work. The boat that went to IR9 & IR11 collected about 250 Ibs of trash. Field trip ended at approximately at 12 noon.
