6. OLD BUSINESS:
A. Earth Dav — Saturday, April 21, 2012
Ms. Graves distributed a handout of ideas for Earth Day activities (see attached) . She
mentioned that Rosemary was unable to do the peanut butter pinecones and asked for
. volunteers, said that Ronald McDonald is booked for that day but there is no official
confirmation of his attendance yet. Ms. Terry-Bender asked what he had to do with Earth
Day and Ms. Graves said the children love him.
Ms. Graves said she had not had a commitment from the DJ yet but if he cannot do it she
will ask her friend Michael do it, stating the band was too much. Mr. Gordian said he had
friends who played folk music and he could probably get them to play, and Ms. Graves
said he should invite them. She went over the invitations she had emailed out and some
had bounced back, including Master Gardener, Creature Safe. Mr. Alvarez offered to call
some of them. Ms. Graves said KIRB bounced back but Ms. Schnee had seen someone
at Frog Leg and they committed.
Ms. Graves said UFL Extension Service bounced back and she would really like them to
participate, and she would like to get the Busch Sanctuary involved.
Mr. Gordian said the Sebastian River High School Green Club will have a table and
discussion followed about getting kids in the community to help plant trees. Ms. Graves
said she knew a man in the community who has a few larger trees to donate and asked if
they could be planted in Easy Street park at least to replace the one that was lost, and
noted there may be a maintenance issue in planting a larger tree. Ms. Sieferd said she
would talk to Chris McCarthy.
Ms. Graves then read the list of commitments: Sea Turtle Rescue, Friends of St.
Sebastian, Ronald McDonald (maybe), Environmental Learning Center, and Indian River
Lagoon National Estuary.
Discussion returned to the peanut butter pinecones, and Ms. Graves said this could be
done at the Board's arts and crafts table, and people can contact Publix and Winn Dixie
for peanut butter, start collecting pinecones, jars and egg cartons and buy eyes and felt.
Ms. Schnee said she had plenty of pinecones.
Discussion followed on whether it was necessary to do door prizes and after discussion,
it was decided that twelve door prizes would be sufficient.
Ms. Schnee asked what had become of the Great Smoky Mountain giveaway offer and
free rain barrels, noting Donna Cyr was going to contact them. Ms. Graves said it was
worth following up on, particularly the free rain barrels and said she would check with Ms.
Cyr and if they can't do it perhaps someone else can give a demonstration, noting Coca
Cola will donate barrels.

Ms. Terry-Bender asked if we could send flyers to the schoois and Ms. Graves said it is a
very difficult process to go through with the schools, and said we advertise on radio, N
local channels, and said the TC Palm is so invested in the Hibiscus Festival we don't get
the press, except from VeroNews.com which is on-line news. Ms. Terry-Bender said she
would try to get the coverage through the press. Mr. Gordian suggested the Turtle News.
Ms. Schnee asked if everyone had flyers and Ms. Graves said she would email them.
B. Board Liaison GinnSieferd will give update on Fertilizer Ordinance
Ms. Sieferd reported to the Board that their comments on the fertilizer ordinance had
been copied to members of City Council and the City Manager has advised her that the
fertilizer ordinance will be brought to Council either at the end of February or March.
Ms. Schnee briefly advised the Board on action by the State legislature on fertilizer
issues.

Mr. Kriss volunteered to take care of it. Ms. Graves told him there are three boxes there
and described the contents.
STAFF MATTERS:
Ms. Schnee said at Crab-E-Bills there is a plot under the tree house that has invasive
plants and no natives and asked if we could ask the City to take the invasive plants out.
Mr. Kriss said he knew Bill and could talk to him. Ms. Sieferd said she would look into it
and see what could be done. Ms. Graves said maybe this could be a project for the
Board. Ms. Schnee said it was unfortunate that they are able to sell invasives at

Egg cup insects
Let your imagination run wild when making these cute little egg cup insects. Kids can use whatever colors
they like to create their own fun
designs!
This idea makes a fabulous recycled
craft for Earth Day. Atso, spring into
our selection of spring crafts,
printable acriviries and tasty recipes!
What you'll need:
Cazdboard egg carton
Scissors
Paint: colors of your choice
Chenille stems: colors of your choice
Craft lrnife, small scissor, or sharp
pencil
White craft glue
Medium and large pom-poms
Wiggle eyes
How to make it:
Have an adult cut egg cups out of egg carton and trim clean. Paint in various colors of your choice and let
dry. (See photo.)
While egg cups are drying, create insect wings by cutting and bending chenille stems into various dii%rent
shapes. (See photo.)
Have an adult use a small scissor, sharp pencil, or craft knife to poke a hole in each side of the egg cup,
insert wings into the holes. If you want the wings farther back on the body, poke the holes closer together.
(See photo.)
Turn egg cup upside down and bend ends of chenille stems against the side of the cup to help hold them in
place. (See photo.)
Using two large pom-poms for heads or one medium pom-pom for bulging eyes, glue them to the fronts of
the egg cups. (See photo.)
Use skinny chenille stems for legs and antennae. Antennae can be glued right to the pom-pom head. Legs
can be inserted in the sides of the egg cup in the same fashion as the wings.
Glue on wiggle eyes on the pom-poms to complete the face.
Tips:
You can decorate your insects even more by adding polka dots. Just dip the handle end of a paintbrush into
a contrasting color of paint and dot on.
Foam egg cups can be used as well, but the cardboard soaks up the paint better though.
Colored wiggle eyes are available at your local craft supply store.

What vou'll need:
Clean, empry glass jars
Felt, any color you like
Pom poms (for noses)
Scissors
White craft glue
Wiggle eyes
Gesso (recommended: Liquitex
Basics Gesso) or white craft paint
Patterns
How to make it: ;
  =
Print the patterns. -n,,, t
Remove lid from jar and paint with a
layer of Gesso or white paint. Let dry. -
(See photo.)
Line the top of the lid with glue. Pipe glue around the outside rim as well.
Place lid, glue side down, onto a piece of felt. (See photo.) Wrap felt around lid and rim and hold snugly
so glue can begin to grab. Sometimes felt will soak up the first layer of craft glue. If this happens, pipe
more glue around the rim and repeat. (See photo.)
Trim the excess felt around the edge of the rim. (See photo.)
Fill the jar with whatever knick knacks, toys, or coins that you like.
Return the felted lid to the jar.
Cut additional animal pieces (ears, cheeks, trunks) from pattern to create animal faces. We used
contrasting colors for some of our designs. For emple, we used maroon for the red dog's cheeks to stand
out against its red face. (See photo.) Glue these pieces on, using our finished photo as a guide on where to
place them (See photo.)
If creating the cat or dog, cut out long thin strips of felt for the whiskers and glue them on top of the
cheeks.
Glue the facial parts in piace. Use pom poms for noses. (See photo.)
Glue on wiggle eyes. (See photo.)
Tips:
Get creative and make whatever animals you like.
Use jars from jelly, mayonnaise, pickles and other condiments.
You can use hot glue for attaching the felt to the lids if you like.
