Not one to talk about it much in the years following World War II, Guevremont, 90, who died Monday, opened up later on and would be touched by those harrowing moments, especially during visits to the site. "My dad went back to Pearl Harbor many times and you could look at him and see the memories would come back," said his son, Donald Guevremont. "It was very touching, a very emotional place." Guevremont was the last Pearl Harbor survivor in Sebastian. He died at Sebastian River Medical Center on Labor Day, a national holiday. There are at least seven remaining survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack on the Treasure Coast. The younger Guevremont remembers the family gathering at Pearl Harbor to attend the 50th anniversary of the Japanese attack in 1991. "He spoke of it very often and was very proud of his Pearl Harbor service and his Navy service during the war." However, Guevremont would rarely speak of the incident that entered the United States into World War II when his children were younger. "When we were growing up, Dad didn't really talk about it a lot," his son said. Later on, as his children became adults, Guevremont would give more details about the event. He was serving in the Navy and assigned to the battleship USS Pennsylvania, which would receive some damage during the attack. Just before the attack, Guevremont was on the ship's boat "taking crew members ship http: / /www.tcpalm.cominewsl 2012 /sep /051sebastians- last - pearl- harbor- survivor - eugene -... 9/6/2012 Sebastian's last Pearl Harbor survivor, Eugene Guevremont, dies at 90 : TCPalm Page 2 of 2 to shore for breakfast in the middle of the harbor when planes started coming over and bombs started dropping," his son said. Guevremont barely escaped with his life when he went onboard the repair ship Ogala to help load ammunition. As the attack briefly subsided, he went to another part of the ship and heard an explosion. He returned to discover a bomb had exploded where he had been working. The explosion killed 14 members of the gun crew. Years later, the veteran revealed some of his feelings at the time. "He said he was scared to death," he son said. "He was just a kid and all of a sudden war has broken loose and he wasn't sure what was up. I'm sure he felt they were coming right for his nose." He served with the Navy for the remainder of the war in the South Pacific. Guevremont and his wife, Anne, moved from his native Rhode Island in 1969 to Orlando, where he worked for the Orange County School District before retiring. He was the special guest at the Pearl Harbor Day ceremony at Riverview Park in Sebastian last Dec. 7. "The last few years Dad had gone to all the Pearl Harbor Dec. 7 ceremonies and became more open," his son noted. Guevremont would occasionally tell anecdotal stories about the war years. "Dad was most proud of and really liked to talk more about Pearl Harbor than anything. That was the event." He kept in contact with other Pearl Harbor survivors through local associations and functions. "All the people recognized him around town when he would go out. That was very nice of people to do that," his son said. "He was a good dad." © 2012 Scripps Newspaper Group — Online http:Hwww.tcpalm.cominewsl 2012 /sep /051sebastians- last - pearl - harbor- survivor - eugene -... 9/6/2012 rNameof Alt', ,: State of Florida, Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics T BURIAL TRANSIT PERMIT DATE PRINTED: September 6, 2012 TRACKING NUMBER: 2012121111 DECEDENT INFORMATION sed Date of Death RT GUEVREMONT September 3, 2012 County City, Town or Location Name of facility, or street address If not a facility INDIAN RIVER SEBASTIAN SEBASTIAN RIVER MEDICAL CENTER Name and Address of Funeral Home/Direct Disposal Establishment Fla.
