HomeMy WebLinkAbout04222013 PR MinutesRECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES APRIL 22, 2013 The Sebastian Parks and Recreation Committee was called to order by the Vice - Chairman. Roll Call was taken and the following members were present: Mr. Tenerowicz, Mr. Sims, Mrs. White, Mrs. Webster, Mrs. Flescher, Mrs. Nelson, Mr. Simpson was absent. Staff members present were Linda Kinchen, Secretary; Chris McCarthy, Parks Superintendent APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mrs. Flescher made a motion to approve the minutes from the March 25, 2013 meeting. Second by Mr. Tenerowicz passed unanimously. OLD BUSINESS — 1) UPDATE ON GREENWAY SIGNS This item was tabled till Chairman could be present. NEW BUSINESS - CIP DISCUSSION Mrs. White asks about commingling the funds and Mr. Tenerowicz says the City Manager said it cannot be done. Mrs. Flescher says would like to build a new community center or make drastic improvements to the old one. Mrs. Nelson says went to the Community Center and saw cracked tiles and other things which need to be fixed. Mrs. White says would rather not put any money into that building because monies are low and we should build up reserves. Mrs. Webster says we should make what we have functional. Mrs. Flescher says a new floor and paint would be good Mrs. Nelson says should have a new sign Parks and Recreation Minutes April 22, 2013 Page Two Mrs. Flescher says Kathy needs pamphlet holders, also a covered picnic table fix the basketball court Kathy could hold the basketballs steps on the side need a hand rail, must meet ADA approval for gate and need signage. Mrs. White says again she doesn't want to spend any money on existing building. Mr. Tenerowicz says we need to do something — refurbish the inside or put on back burner for a year. Mrs. White says we need to get familiar with the users. Mrs. Nelson says inside needs paint out side paint looks good 3 new ceiling fans would be good. Mr. Sims says safety might be a concern with the basketball court being so close to the road. He feels we need some signs on US #1 directing people to the center. RAQUET BALL COURT — Chris says Friendship Park doesn't have a lot of room Mrs. White says tennis wall is what should be in budget not a racquetball court All agree on tennis wall — no location is decided. DOG PARK SLAB — Mr. Tenerowicz says does get wet we need the slab Mrs. Flescher, Mrs. Webster and Mrs. White all agree PUBLIC INPUT: Mr. Bob Phelps says thanks for removing the two dead trees gravel by the water stations would be good and the entrance needs the slab there is a drop off there and handicap people have trouble getting through. Charles Cardinale — Rent a Bike asks when the maps will be completed — he rents seven days a week people call him and he drops off the bikes. Jim Sunnycalb asks about moving the entrance to the dog park — Mr. Tenerowicz says would like to wait a year on the restroom until we see if we are going to close the dog park. Mr. Sunnycalb talks about the paper his dog was in He says at Easy Street Park near the playground entrance tree needs trimming The barbeque pits have gotten a lot of response and tells everyone to face book Easy Street park — Creative Playground plastic is coming up in mulch — kids can trip on it rear of the ship has a bolt missing all positive responses about the ship. Says we need dog bag dispensers around the pond at the dog park and trash cans would be good — He says Senior Center people want to know if can remove the Parks and Recreation Minutes April 22, 2013 Page Three plants and put in pavers for outside work also a handicap picnic table at the community center and Riverview Park would be good Mrs. White says we need them Jen Dier says she is at the dog park every night and never sees sunny in the park only on the outside of the fence says Sonny's article in the paper is not an actual representation of the dog park Mr. Tenerowicz says again wait on restroom — Mrs. White tells him to take a breath that this is a city park with other amenities and the restroom is needed. CHAIRMANS MATTERS: None — but thanks to the Public for attending and voicing concerns, Thanks to the city staff for the work they do in the parks Tells the members to visit the parks . MEMBERS MATTERS: Mr. Tenerowicz thanks Chris for the plants behind his house Says we should move the entrance of the creative playground to Tulip Street Put signs back further not right where you turn in like they are on Airport Drive Mrs. Flescher — new grills are great — the Pelican sign is peeling and don't forget the plastic holders for the community center. Mrs. Webster says baseball umpires are needed — get paid in burgers and hot dogs no experience necessary will train Mrs. White says need new Zone maps for everyone and members in the past have picked parks to keep an eye on Mr. Simpson has Bryant Court — Mr. Sims has Schumann - Mr. Tenerowicz has Filbert and Bark Park — Mrs. Nelson will do Hardee park — Mrs. White has Easy Street — Mr. Sims will also do Blossom — Mrs. Flescher will take George Street and Garden Club — Mrs. Webster has Barber Street Sports Complex Mrs. Flescher says benches are falling apart at the Garden Club Park Mrs. White asks about the current status of the projects in CIP — Chris says not expecting to put more irrigation at Riverview will ask if the money can be used for other fountains Parks and Recreation Minutes April 22, 2013 Page Four Mr. Sims asks if a water fountain can be put at the Creative Playground. — Chris to check into STAFF COMMENTS: None Next meeting May 20„ 2013 Will discuss Greenway and CIP With no other business to come before the Parks and Recreation Committee, Vice - Chairman Sims declared the meeting adjourned at 7:30 PM.
