TALLAHASSEE—The Department of Community Affairs announced that Florida Communities Trust
today partnered with the City of Sebastian to purchase the land for the Sebastian Working Waterfronts
Collaborative. The acquisition will promote and educate the public about the commercial fishing heritage
of Sebastian and ensure that commercial fishermen of the Indian River Lagoon continue to have a place to
unload their catch. The project was awarded funding during the Trust's 2008 grant application cycle for
the Stan Mayfield Working Waterfronts Florida Forever Program.
"Protecting Florida's traditional working waterfronts ensures that these coastal communities can continue
their way of life for years to come. The City of Sebastian has a rich history steeped in the commercial
fishing industry along the Indian River Lagoon, and I am pleased the city could partner with Florida
Communities Trust's Stan Working Waterfronts Program to preserve and promote that legacy,"said DCA
Secretary Tom Pelham.
