February 24. 2012 SEBASTIAN—The city of Sebastian wants to renovate the old fish house on the working waterfront, and they're looking for help from the Department of Environmental Protection to do it. A Coastal Partnership Initiative grant could provide up to$30,000 for the construction project, City Manager Al Minner told council members at their Feb. 22 meeting. Any grant would require a one-for-one match from the city and that money could come from discretionary sales tax or community redevelopment money. "I think it's a good grant opportunity,"said Minner. The grant would be used to buy construction materials to restore the fish house at 1532 Indian River Drive. It was destroyed during the 2004 hurricane season but has the potential for being rebuilt, Minner said. The fish house is on a parcel just south of the old Hurricane Harbor building, which is now called Fisherman's Landing. The footprint of the building would remain the same and it would be modeled after a classic "open floor"fish house that could be found on the riverfront in the past. Product would be moved into the fish house, where it could be sorted, weighed, iced, packed and transported to a truck loading area. A second story would contain a visitor's center and observation platform so guests could witness the operations at the working waterfront. During the public comments section of the meeting, Sebastian resident Ben Hocker asked why the city was considering applying for another grant when it had encountered problems with the original Stan Mayfield Working Waterfront Grant. "There is no free cheese in the mousetrap,"said Hocker. "And we're only applying in the hopes we'll get it and then we'll have to allocate the funds." But Mayor Jim Hill said he thought the grant would be a good match for the city and he applauded Minner for writing the grant application. http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2012/feb/24/sebastian-applying-for-grant-to-renovate-ol... 2/27/2012 Sebastian applying for grant to renovate old fish house on working waterfront : TCPa1m Page 2 of 2 "I think it's important that we move forward to seek outside funds to complete the project and $30,000 will certainly help us do that," Hill said. ©2012 Scripps Newspaper Group—Online http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2012/feb/24/sebastian-applying-for-grant-to-renovate-ol... 2/27/2012
