' Federal Port Salerno surrounds the Manatee Pocket, a natural harbor located about 1.5 miles
Consistency from the Atlantic Ocean near the intersection of the St. Lucie and Indian Rivers. The
Pocket is fed by several creeks, including Salerno and Manatee. It is strategically
Florida State located close to both the ocean and the north-south water passage lane. The Manatee
Clearinghouse Pocket thus provides an ideal harbor for fishermen working the Atlantic Ocean, which
» Grants is the principal reason Port Salerno was settled in the early 1900s. By the 1920s,
" Office of Port Salerno was an active fishing port which, at its height, supported eight working
Intergovernmental fish houses in the waterfront area. The net ban resulted in the loss of 'obs and

Environmental and Cultural Resources
Port Salerno's primary environmental resource is the Manatee Pocket itself, the water
body that provides the basis for the water-dependent economy of Port Salerno.
Martin County has begun to address the problem of declining water quality in the
Pocket with an ongoing storm water retrofit project.
The working waterfront with its traditional commercial fishing industry is the most
important cultural resource in Port Salerno, and maintaining the identity of their
fishing village is of paramount importance to the residents of the area. The waterfront
area has approximately thirty historic structures that were identified in a 1997 survey.
Recent Projects
The commercial fisherman of Port Salerno have committed their own funds,
approximately $75,000, to acquire necessary permits, build, and maintain the
commercial docks in order to meet current county codes. The fishermen are currently
organizing more formally and considering incorporating themselves as a non-profit
entity.

The Pirate's Cove Resort houses Martin County's vessel used to pump out holding
tanks of county boat owners. The boat, "Miss Poop", provides an invaluable service to
county boat owners, as well as an obvious positive environmental benefit to the local
waterways.
A group of private investors recently purchased the last of the old Port Salerno fish
houses for adaptive re-use as a boat brokerage or other waterfront-related business.
Tentative Goals
Port Salerno has three primary goals for their area. The first is to enhance the viable
traditional economy of the area. They hope to accomplish this by preserving the
commercial fishing industry and enhancing and expanding local marine-related
businesses. Maintaining the fragile environmental balance of the Manatee Pocket is
also a priority. Finally, public access to the waterfront area is a critical goal of the
community. The waterfront is Port Salerno's most valuable commodity. Both private
and public entities are committed to creating the Manatee Pocket Walk, a public
boardwalk linking the Port Salerno Civic Center to Manatee Park. The boardwalk
would improve the appearance of the park areas which anchor the two ends of the
Manatee Pocket. It is hoped that creation of the Manatee Pocket Walk will boost the
economy of Port Salerno by providing a draw for visitors to the downtown area to
patronize shops, businesses and restaurants.
